Show ch Grow Your Own by Thomas Reeve Sanpete County Agent Many vegetables that are transplanted into your garden can be started right in your house. Some of the vegetables that are easily transplanted are tomatoes, peppers, and egg plants. If you grow your own transplants, you will know how old they are and can plant them out at the proper stage. You can also select the varieties that grow well in your soil and suit your family needs the best. Grow Your Own Plants Seeds can be germinated indoors in many of the containers found in the household such as cooking pans, cut off plastic jugs, milk cartons, small trays, etc. The container should be clean and free from diseases and at least 2 inches deep. If you use these containers, be sure and thin them soon after they germinate, leaving the plants spaced well apart in the container. I prefer to use either peet pots or plastic pots and plant 3 to 4 seeds to each pot. After they have germinated and are up, I select the best plant and thin the rest out. Place the trays in a warm area and keep the soil moist by watering thoroughly as needed. Seeds need at least 6 hours of light daily to germinate. After the seedlings emerge, keep in full sunlight for 12 hours a day. Temperatures should be about 70 to 75 degrees during the day and 60 to 65 during the night. I recommend you germinate your warm season vegetables now. It usually takes six weeks to grow a plant to the size to transplant it into the garden. Seeds should be planted in potting soil that is disease free, light and has a good moisture holding quality. I have found commercial mixtures of peet moss and vermiculite to be excellent. However, you can purchase potting mixes from either drug stores or nurseries in your area. If you would like to make your own mix, the jiffy mix is a popular one and the formula is given below: l& bushel vermiculite, 'fa bushel peet moss, I T. triple super phosphate, 8 T. fertilizer. Thoroughly mix materials together adding water until uniformly wet. One t. liquid dishwashing detergent per gallon of water will improve wetting qualities. You will need to stir the mixture while adding water to insure complete wetting of the peet moss. Another good soil mix to use in growing your own transplants can be taken right from your garden. This mixture contains 2 parts each of garden loom and part sand. Well rotted manure or shreaded leaf mold can be substituted for the peet moss if you desire. Garden soil alone is seldom suitable for potting plants because it is peet moss and 1 Section, April 13, 1978 usually too low in organic ana does not drain well, If you need more information about growing transplants, you can contact me at the Exten-- . sion Office at the Courthouse Auttioriiod CittMnlm nh auvu pm .... 1 J .. 585 West Main 8 Salina, utah-529-363- NEW c Qn e n i dl DISHWASHERS Dd 5 SAVE ENERGY, SAVE TIME, SAVE MONEY.
