Show Lakeside Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Oct. 11, 1989 PORT Sggjgl Sports rap Kurt Murray Sports Writer Well its that time of the year. The leaves have begun to turn colors and fall from the trees, the tempature is dropping to where you need a sweater, or even a jacket. And with those signs it could only mean one thing it is October and it is baseball playoff time! Yes baseball, Americas pass time, the sport that starts in the spring, lasts all summer and ends in the fall, is finally wrapping up another season. And what a season it has been! From the controversy of Pete Rose, to the almost miracle season of the Baltimore Orioles, it has been a year to remember. Now there are only two teams left in this years campaign for the championship. The San Francisco Giants and the Oakland As. This is the first World Series that will have both of the Bay area teams playing for all of the marbles. It is being called the Bridge Series and looks to a great one. Every year is the same as players become heros on the Field. Whether it is a big hit in a clutch moment or an out on a gamble by a manager, each and every game has the moments that make baseball the game that it is. Now I am not the worlds most radical baseball fan, but I season I was all excited because my teams were in the running. Cincinnati and Cleveland. Could this be the year? I would ask myself. Could they really go all the way? And as usual by the second week of the season I would be talking World Series. But as fate always seems to have it, somehow and somewhere along the line my teams would hit their traditional nasty slumps that would put them out of the race. I mean jn years past, (including this year) my team would finish second or third being just two of three games out of first but that wouldnt even be good enough. In the other sports you can still at least have a chance to win it all if you didnt win the division. But I guess that just says that much more for the teams that can make it. Standard-Examine- LAYTON There seems to be a big gap between the top three and or four teams in Region the bottom three. That gap was widened Thursday evening at 1 Layton. The Bonneville Lakers flexed their muscles as they pounded in a Region the Lancers, contest. Bonneville used experience and a well executed offense to dispose of the struggling Lancers. "We have had quite a few juniors playing all year and a lot of sophomores have been playing the last two weeks, said Layton Head Coach Tom Moore. We have a lot of young kids that are getting experience. The experience they are getting, however, may not be advantageous as Layton dropped its 8th game in as many outings. The Lakers scored on their first play from scrimmage as Sean Sylvester hooked up with Tony Gomez for the 0 lead after one quarter. The Lancers looked as though they might give the Lakers all they could handle as they twice had first and goal from the line. MILLER Of course my teams didnt make the play-ofthis year, so as usual I was forced to cheer for a team that I would probably cheer against during the season. And trying to decide who to cheer for is no easy task and I always have to take a few things into consideration. First, who do I hate the most. Second, who is the under dog. And third, and most important, be different from everyone I know. Usually I end up taking a team that I hate, who is the big under dog, and I get faced by everyone I know because I had to be different. Oh well thats what makes the so exciting and this year play-off- s has been no different. bad punt that might have made it a different ball game. field Sylvester kicked a goal and hit Mark Lenthe on a touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Lakers a 0 lead to end the half.
