Weber needs Class Ring Fashions more firefighters Department short of volunteers By PAM HASKELL Lakeside Review correspondent SOUTH WEBER The South Weber Fire Department is looking for a few good men and women. The volunteer service is experiencing a shortage of members, according to Assistant Fire Chief Kie Hale. The roster at the present has 5 names listed; only eight of those people are active volunteers. Ide5 active ally, Hale would like members. Hale said he realizes firefighters arent available day and night, and having a good number of members trained allows for good coverage any time of day. Past members have moved or some have lost interest in serving over the years, leaving the department 1 20-2- in need. Commitment and dedication are required by potential mem- - Trucks lined up for lake By RUTH MALAN Lakeside Review It looks as if KAYSVILLE part of the Great Salt Lake causeway to Antelope Island could be rebuilt if the plans of the Lake Wasatch creator go through, leaving a parking lot and a turnaround for those who like to go out and look at the lake. Funds for the testing dikes of have been allocated by the state, said Don of Johnson, Design Deve- of lopment North Salt Lake, who ad- dressed the Kaysvilte city " council re- cently saying I am the creator of Lake Wasatch. His plan is to turn the eastern third of the lake into a fresh-watLake Wasatch, through the d use of dikes. Johnson said the project can be funded through a $100 million bond. The bond would be paid through culinary water sales from the er inter-islan- lake. Johnson said he has the opportunity to test the dike system that could be used to separate the west from the east side of the lake. Diking with a lock for boats to travel from one side of the lake to the other would be used between Antelope and Fremont islands. Fresh water comes into the lake from the east. He approached the city council to ask for the use of a truck and driver to help haul dirt to the causeway so he can demonstrate the feasibility of the system and at the same time rebuild part of the causeway. His system calls for precast portions of the dike being poured and formed on the island. The dike would be 4 meters wide to form a continuous wall that is flexible. The dike is located between two faults, he said, the Wasatch fault and a fault in the Great Salt Lake. The principal is containment. The test dike has been designed specifically for conditions on the lake. It is corrogated to break the waves. There will be a railing to give extra height to resist ice and waves and for people to stand by to view the lake, said Johnson. He asked the council for a truck to carry fill out to the causeway. He said that Syracuse has already been helping with its truck and that Bountiful has' offered a truck and driver although that is not in writing, he added. The Kaysville council made no decision on the matter. erbjsi w, Ah-Tum-- Specials! Applicants should be in good physical health. Officers of the department interview all prospective firefighters, he said. The department answers approximately 30 calls a year and members meet every Wednesday for training and education. Hale said that safety is their priority. Studying the type and behavior of fires and determining their source are aspects all firefighters will learn, he said. Once you know the principles behind the fire you know how to deal with it, Hale said. South Weber has never experienced a death or major injury fighting a fire since the depart ment was formed in 1967. Many different skills are used by the department when on a call. Ingrid Byrum was one of three women who has served with the department. It was a wonderful experience, I was treated just like a team player, she said. If I got to the station first, I drove the truck. Firefighters do not just get on the truck and go home after a fire, Hale said. Equipment has to be cleaned, checked and restocked. In cases where an individual cant make the call, he will come later to help the tired firefighters clean up. IHlTtRCSALEENwOcClSl john's Jewelry Certified Gemologist Appraisers 3920 Wtsti. BM So.
