Show I Davis 'bigger' 5? A- LYNN AVERETT KAYSVILLE The word bigger is being said a lot at Davis High School. And that B word refers U the Darts football team. Were going to be bigger than weve ever been, said fifth year head coach Jim Dickson. Bigger may not be better, but Ive been involved in this game a long time and I know bigger doesnt hurt, he added. Davis size may bother opponents as much as the Darts double wing offense, or the Davis wishbone as its called in Kays-vill- e. Running Davis offense is quarterback Jake Davis. He will be surrounded with a bevy of talent. Running backs are Carl Gardiner, Jeremy Chiles, and Paul Warden. Karl Garcia and Scott Richardson fill the receiver positions. Madison Clawson is starting at center, and returning starters Nate Hulse and Scott Harris are the guards. Fred Bartley returns at tackle and Doug Graham plays tight end. Weve got six returning starters (Gardiner, Chiles, Warden, Hulse, Harris and Doug Beard), and I feel good about having that many kids coming back, said Dickson. As a coach, you always feel : good when you have that many players with a lot of play time on the field, he added. S' & mT t" A w -' 4 ,wvQ Svv" i 4 ,v y.: fi X '' 2 The Daris defense seems to be as solid as its offensive unit. Leading the defensive squad are Doug Beard and Scott Christensen at tackles. Fred Bartley, who started for the Darts early last year until an injury sidelined him, and Troy Vanderhule are solid at defensive ends. Paul Warden and Travis Edgar start at inside linebackers while Carl Gardiner and Karl Garcia play outside linebackers. The secondary is manned by Chris Ramsdale, Bob Peppier and Jeremy Chiles. I think our defense will play well together, said the Davis coach. Other Darts who should contribute include: kicker Aaron Rasmussen, Jon Rhodes, Travis Hill, Tom Smart, Mitch Felix and Dan Dygert. The Darts went 5 last year and many people wrote them off after their first two games (both losses). However, the Davis squad came back strong only to be beaten in the state quarterfinals by Orem, who went on to win the state 4A championship. A lot of people wrote us off early last year. But the kids didnt quit, the coaches didnt quit and the parents didnt give up on us. We pulled together and played Orem as tough as anybody, said Dickson. Staff photo by Robert Regan 6-- I think Darts, he responded, coaches put pressure on themselves and that may rub off a little, but we have experienced players coming back. Last year we started with kids who didnt have any play time. It just took a while to put it together. We all believed in ourselves. Dickson also sees the region as wide open this year. I know thats what every coach says at the first of the season, but its true this year. Highland is always tough and East may be a surprise. Highland picked up Davis eight or nine new players and East picked up 20 (the players are coming from South High which closed at the end of school last May), said Dickson. If any of these kids are impact players, who knows what will happen, he added. We expect Bountiful to be strong. Theyve finished in the top three (in Region 4) over the past few years. Then theres Woods Cross. They have a lot of young kids who went 1 as juniors. You never know what theyll do. They may come out 8-- and beat everyone. That happened to us a couple of years ago. We had a team with only one returning player (Chris Card) and look what we did. We go 12-- 1 only losing in the championship game, said the Davis mentor. Viewmont is led by its third new head coach in the last three years. Joe Yanowsky is taking over from his brother. Anything could happen with Viewmont. Their kids may pull together and play well. But it has to have an effect on the kids. Three systems in three years, thats a hard adjustment, said coach Dickson. As Ive said, anybody has a chance to win it this year, he added. Davis not only has an excellent head coach but a coaching staff that works well together. Assistant coaches include Mike Gardner, Bruce Bitner, Val Cullimore, John Flint, Russ Jones, Kent Draayer, Jeff Ison, Frank Thompson and Jeff Emery. Theres not a better coaching staff anywhere in the state. .4 downs Weber ; 4 - ST , 4 $ asw , threat to '88 grid opponents Lakeside Review correspondent T , i 'V 'aT.. Watching the Darts at that key moment of the game caused coach Jim Dickson to wax nostal- late-gam- i $ ;'c, gic. That drive right there, that took 14 plays and consumed eight minutes, reminded me a little bit of some of the old Davis football teams, Dickson said. But Dickson quickly added there were other times during the game his team just didnt click. It was a typical first game. We had some good moments and some bad moments. Sometimes we moved the ball well, and sometimes we couldnt move it at all. Sometimes we shut them (Weber) downand other times we couldnt stop them. But it was good enough for me. We can certainly see some room for improvement. Im just glad we could learn some things and still win, Dickson said. e Aside from the drive, a statistic that could resurrect memories of Dart teams past is a strong, balanced running attack three backs totaled 50 or more yards on the day. ; Karl Gardner ran 67 yards, while Paul Warden bowled for 59 and Bryan Kynaston raced for another 50. Davis opened the scoring in d the second quarter on a run by Jeremy Child and Aaron Rasmussen added the PAT. However, the Warriors pulled the game into a 7 tie just before TD intermission on an eight-yar-d pass from Chris McGarry to Jay Preston. Jason Craig kicked the extra point. Davis regained the lead for good when quarterback Jake Davis connected on a pass to Kynaston, who scooted into the end zone. .The extra point failed however, leaving the door open for Weber to take control of the game with a TD. The Warriors marched to the d line, but couldnt get the ball in. From there the Darts moved the ball down to the Weber 20, where Rasmussen booted field goal, which meant a Weber had to score twice to win. The Wariors did score one more time. McGarry connected with Preston once again this time from 12 yards out, but there were only seconds left in the game.
