Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, October 28, 1987 7A CALLAHAN JO-AN- Lakeside Review correspondent Awkward FARMINGTON intersection is the way P.D. Kiser, a professional traffic engineer for the Wasatch Front Regional Council, describes the area at the base of Compton Bench Road. Kiser was asked by the city to look at some of the problem spots in Farmington and to give his recommendations to the City Council Oct. 21. He toured the lower Compton Bench Road, 200 South Main in- tersection and the area near Knowlton Elementary School on Shepard Lane. According to Kiser, When the bus came through on Main Street it was pretty scary. 0 mph The traffic averages the base road at of stretch on that of Compton Bench. In the time he monitored the traffic there were never more than two vehicles waiting to cross Main Street at the time. Kiser concluded that the best thing for the city to do would be to modify the intersections, making them both at 90 degree angles. He also recommended the city 45-5- trim trees by the intersection so that approaching traffic can be seen in both directions. The city has proposed making the lower end of Compton Bench street and Kiser feels y a that the city should go ahead and try it It is an easy decision to change if it does not solve the problem. I would recommend a regular police enforcement of this restriction after it is implemented. He then discussed the 200 South and Main Street intersection with the council. This street is close to Farmington Elementary School and the Interstate entrance. People drive down 200 South Street past the school to enter the freeway to Salt Lake. A stop sign was considered to slow down the traffic. one-wa- Kiser said, In none of the studies 1 was involved in were stop signs ever found to be an efficient deterrent to speeding, especially in residential areas. .We did one of the most comprehensive studies on the use of stop signs and found that people did not comply with the stop sign. The best method to control traffic speed is with strict police enforcement. Speed bumps were also discussed and the council voted to pass on his recommendations to the public safety committee. Kiser said he would study the problem at Shepard Lane in more detail and monitor the traffic there before making a decision on the problem. He said he can see many difficulties with the area. Sunset officer I proposal OK'd I ;J. The Sunset City SUNSET Council has agreed to allow Police Chief Bruce Gunderson the option of using reserve officers to fill in for regular officers on overtime and holiday hours. The reserves will be paid $7.50 per hour for overtime or on holidays when regular officers desire the time off. Currently, police officers are paid the regular holiday pay and then arc paid for the hours they work. Using the reserve officers will create a slight savings to the city, the difference between the e pay and the $7.50 reofficer serve pay. At the same time it will provide time off on the holidays for officers who desire to spend it with their famifull-tim- Little Goblins To Ogden City Bring Your Week-enOf Halloween Fun, Malt For A d ' lies, he said. -frightening PHOTOS Come have your picture taken by Polaroid for ' free in our hot air balloon this Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Center Cqujt, Gunderson said the reserve officers are required to be certified and put themselves through the academy hoping to fill slots, where a regular officer might be e basis. needed on a About half of the regular officers would like to work the holidays for the extra money, he said.
