Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, April 8, 1987 Billboard gives Layton LYNDIA GRAHAM ; Lakeside Review correspondent LAYTON Advertising a product can be a tricky business and sometimes can be very costly, but a Layton official said the free advertising received for Layton's Surf n' Swim pool came as a real surprise. The surprise wasnt without controversy, however. ,It began when a billboard advertising the new wave pool was erected in Clearfield within a stones throw of Clearfields own pool. 'We didn't intentionally place a sign in Clearfield near their pool Layton City Manager Bruce Barton An Ogden newspaper ran a story 'alleging the unhappiness of some Clearfield officials over the billboards location. They appar-- ently thought it was inconsiderate of Layton to advertise so close to negotiating process which result- ed in a public service rate about $10,000 less than the average market cost, said Barton. Clearfields pool. Meanwhile, Layton refused to release the cost of the 18 billT boards they had paid Regan Advertising for. That information was released last week. City Manager Bruce Barton said the city meant no harm in not releasing the advertising costs, which amounted to $3,000 for the 18 billboards from Feb. 15 to 9A itself in so much hot water over the swimming pool advertising and didnt know witholding the cost of the signs would make waves" but Barton said it all worked out well in the long run. He is a former Davis County commissioner, Layton City mayor, and food store owner and operator. He was also fmanager of the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. Winegar served on the Utah Water and Power Board, forerunner to the current Board of Water Resources, from 1961 to 1969 and on the Utah Natural Resources Board between 1969 and 1970. He is a member of the advisory board, Northern Division, First Security Bank, and former president of the Utah Water Users Association.
