Mom had the bath water running in the tub and had gone downstairs to get some clean towels. Matt just couldnt wait any longer. He climbed, clothes and all, into the tub. Luckily it was just the right temperature. But he was fascinated with the knobs in front of him. He gave one a quick turn and then pulled up on the other. It was really interesting to watch her hold that long thing in her hand and twist it in her hair to make a curl. When the phone rang, Mom ran to answer it. Danny couldnt reach the long curling iron. But he did manage to pull on the cord. As the hot iron fell down, Danny grasped it with one hand. Most burns are preventable, and this is why burn prevention is an important thing to learn. Many bums deal with water. It takes less than one second for water coming from a water heater set on the highest thermostat (usually at least 160 degrees) to cause a third degree bum. That time period is simply not enough for a child to react before becoming badly burned. Howev ld . er, many parents are not aware that their water heater has three thermostat settings. By simply turning the thermostat to low", Mom and Dad can prevent the likelihood of a major water burn. With a thermostat turned to low, the temperature ranges from 120 degrees to 130 degrees. A burn with water this temperature would take four minutes to become a third degree burn. Remember to keep pot and pan handles turned into the stove. Little curious people want to see whats inside that handle they can just reach up and touch. And never carry your child around with you while youre working with or holding hot things. Phone calls and other distractions can be deadly when a tiny child is left alone. Whoever it is on the phone or at the door can call back, or you can scoop the child up with you to answer. Make sure bathtime is even for a well supervised chld who seems old enough to get in and out of the tub alone. Bathtime could be Moms time to clean the bathroom, or do some reading, stitching, or letter writing. The bridegroom graduated t from Davis High and will be at- tending Utah Technical College. ' He is a member of the National car- -' - Guard and is a pet layer. ; The couple will make their home in Salt Lake City. fvette6 Tfazn V;.
