But what are the chances of finding twin girls who deliver newspapers on the same street, on the same day, at the same time? Slim to none? Not in Davis County. Brooks Poulsen Let students learn on their own Sixth grader wins in How much help from parents is too much? BONNIE SMITH Review columnist Dear Bonnie, I am really frustrated. How much should I help my child with school projects and How much is too much assig-nemt- s? help? I see many parents practically . ' doing their childs work and those children get wonderful grades. I let mine do their own work and mine get As, Bs and a few Cs periodically. Then Mr. Next-DoNeighbor does his kids science project and his kid gets and A. Mine do theirs alone and get and are mad at me beBs father helped cause him and I didnt help them so or . os they got bad grades. The big thing now is that parents should help their kids more and more and home; should I actually be helping them more? Wheres the fine line between enough and too much help? What do you do with your children? studies if they are desperate for an answer I might tell them what page it is on, but take it from there. Once in a while if there is total confusion regarding the assign- L.M. Dear L.M. Let me first clarify that some children get As without Mom andor Dad doing much at all. The rule of thumb that I use with my own children is: Develop a skill? Yes. Do the work? No. When my children have reports to write, I show them how to choose topics, take and organize notes, outline, etc. I will not take notes for them and quite often Chalk Line (much to their chagrin) I make them practice a bit different material before they begin the report. The same holds true in every subject. In math, I have them practice problems similar to their assignment until the skill is mastered then they do the assignment. In science and social ment, I do talk them through the exact answer but this process is reserved for only the most critical moments. I will also, upon request, tell them which answers are correct or incorrect; then they correct the wrong answers by themselves. If they cannot figure out what is wrong, we are back to teaching a skill. Science projects are famous for o projbeing ects. Personally, Ill drive to libraries (or wherever) give ideas Mommy-Daddy-D- and suggestions and serve as a resource person and sounding board. When the actual project is to be done, I offer all the help I could if I were sitting in a chair with my hands tied behind my back (although, if its D quality or very messy I say plenty!) Again, I make rare exceptions in cases of extreme frustration (if a great masterpiece fall apart, etc.) The purpose of assignment in any subject is to encourage learning and investigaton by the students. If learning has not taken place because Mom andor Dad have done too much, then the assignment, however wonderfully done, has been a waste of time.
