Show 1 ' - i i " Lakeside Review, Tuesday, December 24, 1985 - North Davis seniors busy with activities at center ' )W LYNDIA GRAHAM Review corespondent CLEARFIELD What do ple over 60 who live in north peoDa-,v- is County do after retirement? Many of them sew, knit, do ceramics, take lapidary classes, eat Idclcious meals, visit, play pool, "and cards, make gifts, see movies, "travel together, and play games. J At least those who are taking advantage of the Clearfield Heri- tage Center do. They do all these things and more at that center located in the basement of the North Davis branch, according to Karmen Rowse, director of the ; center. She said many people think the center is a nursing home and others dont know the center exists but those who know about and understand the centers program are delighted with what goes on there. Lunch is served daily by volunteers after it is prepared at Clearfield High and transported to the Heritage Center. Not only do people eat at the center, where they can have lunch with friends, but lunch is taken into the homes of 30 to 40 homebound people daily. Even some with special dietary needs have meals delivered to them from Humana Hospital . Davis North. Nutritional needs are important . but even more important are the opportunities for socilization the center offers. Friends can meet with people near their own . , . - Often when it is time to go home, the vans passengers are taken to nearby stores to shop for groceries or gifts, making it possible for them to have a little more freedom if they do not have transportation. Ms. Rowse said the transportation needs are among the greatest because of the unique situation of Davis County. She said it is an urban area but in reality many of the people over the ages of 60 or 70 live in very rural areas and oftern have limited contact with people. The center provides both transportation and social cotact, acting as a bridge between the hombound person and the outside world. Physical needs are also met at the center. There are blood pressure clinics, screenings for various diseases and health fairs. Help is also offered with the red tape of Medicare and other government forms. Advice on filling out forms can be given at the center and if the Heritage Center cant fill a specific need, the staff can send the person in need to the right agency, accordcon-dier- ed ing to Ms. Rowse.
