' Two weeks before Christmas I was on my way to pick up some d layaways with some money and was driving on River-dal- e Road at the top of the hill. And the transmission went out on my car. I left it at the shop and went to the bank and they wouldnt give me a loan. I didnt know what to do. I had $300 to get the layaways out and the car bill was $280. I had to get the layaways out for the kids and everybody else. I got a loan that my mom cosigned on.' But when I had to pay for the car it cost about $60 more when the final bill finally came. A lot of things happened, I was poor, period. On Christmas eve about ten oclock, after the kids were in bed I was putting together toys and then the doorbell rang. I had to rush upstairs to get a nice robe on and when I went to look, nobody was there. I went to open the screen and something was blocking the door. And here was a huge green garbage sack with a big ribbon around it. With the ribbon there was a card that said Merry Christmas from Santa Claus. I brought it in and opened it and there was a play sewing machine for my girl, a fire truck and some toys for the youngest. And a sweater and a pair of levis for me. And to this day I dont know who did it It wasnt my mother. Neighbors say they saw a green Ford, and I dont know who owned a green Ford. I kept asking people Tell me if it was you so I dont have to be nice to everybody. It was by far my most memorable. I keep telling my kids there was a Santa Claus, there really was. Gary Hatch, sports editor: One thing I remember was something we alwayS did for Christmas. All my friends and I did after we opened Christmas presents with our families we would go around and see what each other got. And whoever got the new basketball, wed grab it and play all afternoon. If nobody got a basketball wed use the one somebody got last year. When I go home now we still get together every Christmas day and all the days around Christmas too and play basketball. This has been going on for about 15 years. Darlene Mix, receptionist: I remember Christmases when our children were young. On Christ- mas day we had to visit both families. Even though it was hard visiting them and eating two big Christmas dinners in one day those are treasured memories. Now that the family has passed on they are special memories. You dont have your family forever. Letter to the editor Wing commander thanks community Review Editor As we prepare for the Christ- mas and New Year season, I want to thank the people living in the communities surrounding Hill Air Force Base for opening their homes and hearts to the men and women of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing for another year. As commander of the wing, I know how important it is that our people feel at home in their community. They are happier. their lives are more content, and they do their jobs better. We dont have the worries of not being accepted by the community. You accept the people from the 388th TFW with open arms and make us feel at home. Although military life has improved a great deal in recent years, it is still not an easy life, especially for some of the young men and women thousands of miles from their homes for the first time. The holiday season can be extremely hard on them. Your kindness helps ease the homesickness for many of them. This winter the wing marks its tenth anniversary of being at Hill Air Force Base and I would like to thank you, the citizens of Utah, for welcoming us to your beautiful state. The excellent facilities and training areas enable us to maintain the highest state of combat readiness which I pray will serve as a strong deterrent to our potential enemies. From myself, my wife, Sallie, and the men and women of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, we wish each of you the most joyous of holiday seasons. Col. James M.
