Serious job hunting requires ability to market your job skills effectively Just as each job requires certain skills, job hunting requires the ability to market your job skills effectively, says James P. Bucher, assistant director for placement with the Career Development and Placement Center at The Pennsylvania State University. Finding a job requires a planned, systematic effort. You must know how to sell your skills and abilities in the labor market. It is important to get your act together before you make the first contact with the marketplace, says Bucher, a former procedures analyst with IBM. You may want an information interview, where you talk with someone doing a job in which you have an interest. Ask what the worker likes and dislikes about the job, but never ask for a job during an information interview. When filling out applications or preparing your resume be neat and correct, fillif ing in all blanks. Write not applicable a question does not apply. Your cover letter should be in a business letter format addressed to the person who can hire you. The interview is critical, Bucher says. Most recruiters make a tentative decision in the first few minutes of the interview. Their decision is greatly influenced by whether or not they like you your looks, rather your clothes and your personality than the facts on your resume. Six ways to locate employers are: Ask people to help you, use a job placement service, check the help wanted advertisements in the newspaper, use a directory of employer names to contact them, publicize your availability with an advertisement in a newspaper or trade magazine and go to where employers gather. While Bucher says the keystone of job hunting skills is assertiveness or asking for what you want while representing the rights of others," he outlines 16 traits the College Placement Council views as valuable to employers. Sense of direction, which calls upon an applicant to assess what they want from a career and conduct a realistic of capabilities and goals. Goal achievement, the ability to set and obtain specific goals. Interpersonal skills, the ability to encourage members of a group to get the job done and get along with people. Leadership, as not merely telling people what to do, but having them want to do it. e, an important first step in relating to others, the ability to see yourself as others see you. a sense of maturity and speaking with assurance. Intelligence, here, meaning having a quick mind, catching onto procedures anc generating new ideas and concepts. Imagination, not just looking at the established ways of doing things, but look ing for a new and better approach. Willingness to accept responsibility, not being afraid to get involved and do more than what is required. Initiative, the ability to see what needs to be done and to act. Ability to communicate going beyond clarity and proper grammar to enthusiasm, humor, thoughtfulness and tact. Ability to handle conflict, successfully dealing with stress situations and antagonism. Competitiveness and drive that can make the difference between persons with equal traits. Flexibility, being open to new ideas and able to evaluate a variety of opinions effectively. Energy level that conveys "Im a to potential employers. Vocational skills, education and the ability to apply that education to do the job. More information about these traits and developing job hunting skills is available in a correspondence course offered through the College of Agriculture at The Pennsylvania State University.
