SHARON NAUTA STEELE Spe&al to the Lakeside Review TWhat would you like for your next birthday, Mom? my oldest daughter once made the mistake 6f asking me in front of her best friend, Sara Bellum. , As luck would have it, Jennifers question came just moments after I had finished posting my monthly planning calendar on the refrigerator door. The anniversary itf my birth was barely visible beneath a complicated schedule of Qur familys summer activities. 7 To begin with there were, the piano lessons, swimming lessons, H club meetings, and softball games. Of course each type of activity was scheduled in multiples bf six, because six happens to be How many children we have, and pot one of those kids is old pough to do anything or go anywhere without a supervising, chaperoning, and chaufiering parent, namely me. In addition to the kids doings, there were family reunions, neighborhood picnics, church outings, and overnight camping trips, each requiring the preparation, packing, and afterwards un- -- Would Soon Be Gone It packing, of tons of food, clothing, and equipment. And as if all those calendared events were not enough, there were the everyday demands of home and yard maintenance washing, sweeping, and cooking, watering, mowing, and weeding chores that had to be sandwiched into each day like extra pickles in an overstuffed hoaeie bun. "Time, I said, thinking how Id bitten off more of that hoagie than I could possibly chew in the limited hours of each day. For my birthday. Id love to have more time. Oh, come on, Mom," Jennifer laughed, no tone could give you more time, unless... Unless Jenny and I get real busy, as usual Sara interrupted in that voice she reserves for dispensing ingenious ideas. (Sara doesnt mind letting me know that she is undoubtedly the smartest 11 -- Unless you two get real busy? I asked with undisguised hope. You mean youd actually consent to wash my windows, mow my lawns, and fold my laundry? Naw, that wasnt what I had in mind at all! Sara sniffed. After all, youre perfectly capable of doing all those things yourself, Mrs. S. What I thought Jennifer and I could do would be get a petition going for the legislature to add an -- Ive ever year-old time. On second thought, girls, I think Id like something more practical than time for my next birthday. Something like a pet boa constrictor would suit me just fine. extra day to every week.
