They feel the voluntary reading pro- printed page. But if any teenager doesn't already know that his parents dont know all the answers, then the child is mentally handicapped or has been duped by the parents. Parents secure in their relationships with their children will be able to admit ignorance on certain subjects and help their child to find the an- gram teaches children to disregard authority while reading sometimes-inappropriat- se- e lections. Wendell Wiser, spokesman for the parents, has told the Davis County School Board that the Junior Great Book swer. Wiser contends that use of the Great Books program will weaken family ties. But he gives no facts to support such an argument. The program is not designed to destory authority. It is simply an exercise to make children realize they can think with information given them. According to the program, after reading one of the stories the student is to not introduce outside opinions--thos- e of a teacher or parents, for support what you think a story means. Its an exciting challenge to each student. After years of being given teaching, they now have a chance to use thought processes they have developed. It does not attack authority. It only asks the student to reach deeper in understanding. Eventually, every individual will have a time in hisher life to question an authority. While searching for truth is honorable, no person can claim heshe knows the one and only way to search for truth. The Great Books program is designed with short selections from Ray Bradbury, Rudyard Kipling and other noted authors. After reading the selections, students arc asked to develop their own conclusions. It doesn't tell the students what to think. Rather, it only asks that they think. But in a seven page critique of the program. Wiser told the Davis County School Board that by relying on their own minds, the program will lessen the students" reliance on parental authority. Given the inclination of many teen-ag- e youth to believe that their parents do not know the answers, this condition will be aggravated by the indoctrination of children to avoid seeking the opinions of parents in relation to the material they read. The effects of this indoctrination may extend far beyond the hand-to-mou- Photo by Robert Regan DURING HOT July and hotter August most swimming pools are filled with water to occupy the time of young boys like Aaron Clawson of Farmington. But if a student learns how to use his mind, questioning an authority could turn out to be a positive and edifying th experience rather than lashing out against established principles. Parents and authority will always be important in our society. But society must still fear the person who blindly accepts authority. History has too many examples of the disastrous results when people dont think for themselves. Review Editor: Lakeside Review Letter Policy Outlined five James V.
