Show Lakeside Review, Wednesday, March 27, 1985 Despite Tournament Losses 3C Lancers Fulfill Objectives GARY HATCH Review Sports Editor Despite dropping close losses the first two rounds of the state tournament, the Layton Lancers fulfilled their preseason goals. They also made good progress as a team throughout a tough Region 1 season, coach Doug Moon said. to Davis in Layton lost 60-5- 3 an opening round game that saw no more than a four-poilead nt through nearly three quarters of play. In the second round the Lancers 9 overtime decidropped a sion to Olympus. We felt like we had a chance to win both games,'" Moon said. Against Davis, we felt like we had to keep the lead. They had a little trouble with our zone defense and we wanted to stay ahead so they couldn't bring us out in a man-to-mwhere they could outquick us," Moon said. 51-4- an AfteT the second-roun- d game, all Moon could do was smile and shake his head over his team's offensive performance. in We got the ball inside the paint where we wanted it. We just couldnt get it to go down. 1 don't ever remember Darrell having that kind of a night shooting. He's a much better shooter than that. And Rex (Brimhall) and Dusty (Perry) were shooting three foot ers and not getting them to go down," Moon said. We played good defense both days, but couldn't get the shots to fall the second," he added. The two losses at the state tournament are not about to dim Moon's view of the season his team had, however. At the beginning of the season we only had one player, Darrell (Martin), who had any experience coming back from the year before. We knew Bonneville and Clearfield were going to be very good and we expected Box Elder to be better than they were. So at the beginning of the season our main goal was simply to get to state," Moon said. We felt good about our season. We tied for second in our league and felt good going into the tournament. dont think we ever played in a ballgame all season that we felt like we were out of. The only thing I regret about the season is that we never put together a complete game that we 1 played as good as we could. We played quarters and halves and parts of games to our potential, but I don't think we ever played a complete game as good as we were capable of. Martin was the Lancer's leader all year. The one the team looked to when they needed a basket, and the one that kept Layton in many of its games this year. Moon said. Martin averaged 18 points per game through the season. I can't say enough about what Darrell has meant to this team." Moon said. Tom Dobbins was a question mark at the season start, but he progressed well during the entire season, becoming the teams best defensive player toward the end of the regular season. And his offense came alive in the state tournament, particularly in the final game against Olympus when he scored a team-hig- h 17 points. Rex Brimhall and Dusty Perry are two big juniors with promise. Both showed flashes of how good they can be this season, and with hard work in the Moon is expecting a lot from the duo next season. off-seaso-n. Senior guard Dan Bankhead filled the point position for the Lancers. He filled the role we asked him to. He was our floor general out there and he shot the ball Moon well against the zone, said. In the game against Olympus, the Lancers shot the ball well enough the first half to take a 26-2- 0 lead into the lockerroom. But when the Lancers took the floor for the second half, their offense must have slipped out a side door of the University of Utah Special Events Center. v- - V' : v ...- t& i yt .a r;; !;! ; " ' 4k. 4 Central Davis Junior High 1 School capped off a season last week by capturing the Davis County title as well as by winning the Ben Lomond tournament.
