Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, August 29, 1984 , Front Line Buti New Falcons Have Bigger SCOTT MONSEN Review Correspondent CLEARFIELD i - It looks like a rebuilding year for the Falcons, nothing new in high school Lsports, but the Falcons have bet-t- r size and speed than in past . years and could be a force in the i Region One outcome. ' iThe Falcons have no returning starters from last years squad so 'all positions were up for grabs when practice began last week. However, head coach Brent Han-- , cbck has seen some encouraging . things in the team so far. ", ;We could start as many as five of six juniors this year, said the - veteran coach. We have a lot of competition for starting spots and ;5the attitude of the players has ;Jbeen excellent. That will pay divi- Jdends for us during the season. Opponents will have to figure Sout how to handle bigger front Hines than they have seen in the Ipast at Clearfield. With Pat Ott, 235, Ken Draidfort, 3 240, Dennis Langford, 3 240, Bruce 'Browniing, 0 210 and Vaughn Hancock expects good IWaite, d protection for the offensive and a strong defensive front The offense may be somewhat !of a question mark, with no proven players in the lineup. The Falcons will miss the passing arm of Jeff Parry, who led the squad last year. Ball control will likely be , the name of the game this season. The Falcons will run a pro type offense from multiple sets and a balanced attack accenting the running game. Hancock said that Clearfield will have excellent running backs and should be able to move the ball. Six players are . 'battling for the positions and all ; will see considerable action. Dean porter and Craig Carter, both i'with good speed, will fill the tail ;6-- 6-- 2, 6-- 6-- 6-- 2, back-fiel- i ; back slot. They will be joined m the backfield by Greg Boseman .. and Todd Ferguson at fullback. Eric Scott and Paul Taylor will also share the ball packing duties. Don Howell and Sean Open shaw are battling for the starting flanker and James Nikerson and Mark Adams will share the split end position. Vet to be determined is the quarterback slot. Brad Sherwood and Chris Garcia are the leading prospects now. Neither have had any varsity experience but should learn fast. Well be a ball control team this year," said Hancock,, but our quarterbacks will devel . op and well throw the ball enough to keep the defenses honest." The offensive line will consist of Ott or Pat Malloy at center, Ken Stoker and. Jeff Folk , at guard, with Langford and Waite the tackles. Browning and Myron Baker will also see action. The likely starting tight end will be Ken Ashby. On defense the Falcons will usually run from the 50 defense with five down linemen. Several players will play both ways for a while but Hancock stated that he would like to keep that to a minimum. The key to the defense will be the front line. With better than average size the linemen will have to pressure the opposing passers and plug holes in the line. Waite will fill the nose guard position. Draifort and Ott will probably start at the tackles and Folk and Kevin Williams will be the ends. The starting linebackers will be Boseman and Porter. The deep backs will likely include Adams. Ferguson Eric Murray and Mark Glauser. A major concern to Hancock is Q-Ba- ck . Photo By Rodney Wright LEO ARTEGA takes a handoff during Falcon practices With the loss of Jeff Parry, Clearfield is left with unexthe lack of depth, a problem that plagues many Region One schools. However, the Falcons have already seen what problems that can cause. We lost two starters last week in our Hancock noted. Darrell Hicks and Brad Weathers are both out at least for three weeks, but that is high school football. scri-mag- e, Another weakness may be the youth and lack of experience on the varsity squad. However, Hancock feels that that could be turned into the strength of the team. We have excellent team unity and the players know that we perienced quarterbacks, forcing the Falcons to use ball control until their passing game can be proven. - Falcon Schedule 71 Aug 31 Viewmont (at Bountiful) ' Sept 7 at Woods Cross Sept 14 Davis at Clfd Sept 21 at Layton Sept 28 Weber at Cfld Oct 5 Bonneville at Clfd Oct 10 at Bountiful Oct 8 at Box Elder Oct 26 Roy at Clfd INTRODUCES BECKY 1 BOYDSTUN dont have any superstars, ' he said. The know that it will take a team effort to be successful and the better players will have to pull up the others Hancock sees the region race as toss-uIll predict that no one will win it undefeated. There isnt a dominate team this year and several teams have improved. a The Falcons will find out in a hurry where they stand with three tough opening games. This Friday they travel to Bountiful to face Viewmont, an expected power in Region Four. Then they face Woods Cross oh the road before hosting last years state finalist Davis the following week. fCOACH BRENT HANCOCK, Clearfields experienced i jcoach, will have a tough beginning for his Falcons when Pfhey play Viewmont, Woods Cross and Davis in the jthree weeks of pre-seaso- p. n.
