Show 2B Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, May 23, 1984 Powerlifting Meet Nets Two New State Records Northern Utah Novice Powerlifting The 1984 .Open wrote the record books in the teenage and high school categories while winning the 132 pound mens division. Johns 1031 pound record total included a record 407 pound r Championships were held at the Browning Armory in Ogden. Forty-fou- r , competitors from .Utah and Idaho entered the . meet. Two mens open state records i , were broken and numerous state high school and teenage state records were also set. , In the womens division, Lana Lee of Ogden took first place over Deborah Lindsay of Twin deadlift. ' Anthony Gallegas of Ogden finished second and Matt Trujillo of Tooele came in third. Marcel Archuleta set a new state record in the mens open category with a 496 pound squat while lifting in the 148 pound , Falls Idaho. class. Marcel also won his division Lanas total of 562 pounds in- eluded a 242 pound deadlift. Nick Flores of Provo captured first place in the 123 pound Morgan placed fourth and set three new state high school and teenage records. ' Carlos Martinez of Roy set a new state high school and teenage record with a 275 pound squat. The 165 pound class was dominated by Idaho lifters Jerry Morton and Curis Cooley. Ogdens Kent Adams took third. Sandys Brent Edmund won the 181 pound division, while Kris Kasper of Logan took and the Best Lifter Trophy for the morning session. Ogdens Dwight Burkes finished second in the 148 pound class and was awarded the Best Master Trophy for the morning class. Jamie Weaver of Morgan, placed fourth and set four teenage and state high school records. Provos John Clayton also re , Frank Jones of Layton captured third and set all new masters records in this class. He was also awarded the Best Master Trophy' for the middle session. ' Morgans Kyle Wilson set all new records in the high school ' 181 pound category. John Zizumbo of Ogden outdistanced the field of 198 pounders and totaled 1488 pounds to take first place and the Best Lifter Trophy for the middle session. Salt Lake Citys Randy Ingle- i sion. Doug Gomez of Sunnyside took third. In the 242 pound class, Mike Sekulich of Clearfield took first place while Sunsets Ben Querubin placed second. New high school records were set by Tooeles Larry Modena Brett Schneiter carded five birdies and only one bogey on his way to a 68 and the championship of the Hill Air Force Base Amateur Golf Tournament. Schnieter birdied the final two holes to outdistance three others at 69. Most of the golfers felt that the course was playing fairly easy, but the treacherous greens made birdies hard to come by. field only Of the nine could break par. Defending champion Mike Kettel was among those to fall victim to the course as he could only manage a two over par 74. r Carl Lynn fired the low net f? score of the day, shooting 60 to . er ; who placed third. In the 275 pound class, Roys Ray Morin totaled 1790 pounds to win his class and the Best Lifter Trophy for the last session. James Fie Fia of Salt Lake City took second and set a new mens open bench press record of 530 pounds. The next area powerlifting meet will be at the end of September.
