and sometimes 15 miles in a day We run before school and during recess But this morning I got tired chasing Jason because he’s faster” Bond said “I’m better at short distances and Colby is better at longer distances” said Malloy “My dad encouraged me to jog He used to run at Ben Lomond” Bond said “I wanted to get the record (932 miles) but I didn't think I could get the record because it was so far” Malloy said “I didn't get that much encouragement I wanted to do it for msclf and figured I might as well try it I had nothing to lose” he said “Everybody started to jog and I wanted to be the top jogger Jason and I were trying to pass each other but we decided to just tic and each one of us get a trophy" said Bond to” Sherman A running mate joins joggers at recess Malloy who is nine months older than Bond admitted being “hooked on jogging because I liked it so much” “It was fun sliding around in the snow (during the winter)” Bond said said “I want to beat my own record” while Malloy said “I just want to stay together (with Colby) and run next year too I think Colby and I can get 1120 miles by the end of May” The rectangular jogging course is located north of the school and two “grasses" (trips) around the course is equivalent to one Bond mile Bonneville's jogging program the only one known to exist the Ogden City School District — started out as Ogden City School’s Joggers Club in — in 1975 It has since been revamped to become Bonneville Elementary School Joggers Club according to teacher Elizabeth Fought Fought a school teacher for 31 years has been the driving force behind the jogging program “The kids (in my classes) have grown up with it” she said “They really enjoy jogging It’s an incentive for the kids to better themselves When they start out in the fall it’s hard for the kids to jog 10 minutes without stopping “It Gogging) shapes them up and I wish it would be a lifetime thing for them I don't believe any other grades do as much jogging as we do” said Fought “Every 40 miles a child runs is recognized over the school intercom Those kids haven't albeen ways my kids but I feel like it’s a good program They come in after recess settle down and work Jogging has really done a job with the kids and sometimes you can really get to know kids by jogging with them “Valecia Veasey was an inspiration to me when she was in class in 1976 my She and I got to be really close Jogging has allowed me to know the kids’ feelings but you don’t talk about academics while jogging” Fought said Since March 25 Fought’s 26 students have jogged over 8000 miles “The parents have been supportive they really have The kids are supposed to jog together and that verifies that they’ve been out But I've had to limit Colby to no more than three miles in the morning or at lunch” said Fought Baseball registration begins Friday Ben Lomond group plays low net putts SOUTH OGDEN — The 1986 South Ogden City Summer Recreation youth baseball season is under way soon with Kroc has known that feeling since she assumed ownership of the San Diego Padres 28 months ago following the death of her husband Ray Kroc founder of McDonald’s Corp “My best moment” she said “was also my worst moment That was when we won our first National League title Ray wasn’t there with me to see it” For Kroc the Padres’ 1984 championship season was bittersweet 1985 and its aftermath turned sour The team buckled under a drug scandal and player discontent with Dick Williams’ style of managing “When you are involved in anything as volatile as baseball you’re going to have ups and downs” she said “It’s a very high and low kind of environment There’s bad luck streaks hot streaks happy streaks and frustrating streaks It probably has more frustrations than most businesses” The downs outnumbered the ups in 1985 Second baseman Alan Wiggins was traded to Baltimore after a relapse of his cocaine dependency and the Padres stumbled to a tie for third place in the NL West Club president Ballard Smith seeking to quell among players attempted to oust Williams during the winter without consulting Kroc his law Smith tried to buy out the final year of Williams’ contract but Kroc backed Williams and publicly rebuked Smith for violating her mandate against contract Williams’ future with the club became a dead issue during the first week of spring training when he quit and Steve Boros was named to replace him Kroc a longtime Williams’ fan won’t discuss the reasons behind Williams’ departure nor will she disclose the financial arrangements made for the final year of his contract However she said she had no regrets she sided with the former manager “I like and admire Dick Williams” Kroc said “I’ll never him I have no reason meetings Farents with children who were registered on 1986 season Entering the weekend the Padres were third in the NL West behind Houston and San Francisco Baseball Relations with Smith meanwhile have improved she said “I’d say Ballard is communicating a lot better From a philosophical standpoint my role is (But) Ballard runs this stronger club” she said Smith says “Everything’s fine There’s no problems” Kroc 57 was introduced" to baseball by her late husband who took her to her first game ’30 years ago while they were on a date in Chicago “I didn’t know until that time that he was a real avid baseball fan” Kroc said In time she developed a fondfor the game “You either learn to love it or you hate it and I love it” she ness said At the same time Kroc doesn’t plan to expand her sports’ holdings “I didn’t ask for this team It just happened” she said “Ray must have had something in mind when he wanted me to have it But I can assure you I won’t be buying a football hockey soccer or basketball team” Her No concern she said is eradicating baseball’s drug problem ’FI “ If I do make any contribifi tion to baseball it will be in that area I’d kind of like to stick around until that is sort of put to rest” she said In 1976 Kroc founded Opera- tion Cork now an arm of the Joan B Kroc Foundation to promote awareness of chemical dependency and its impact on the family In 1980 she established an emassistance program to help Padres’ players and other staffers battling chemical dependency and other problems (During spring training Padres’ pitcher LaMarr Hoyt underwent alcohol rehabilitation and has since rejoined the team) A proponent of in baseball Kroc said she supports Commissioner Peter Ueberroth’s plan to examine players four times a year for cocaine marijuana heroin and morphine The program would be and confidential “I’m hoping that within the next 60 days we will have some word that the commissioner and the players’ union reach some sort of agreement” Kroc said ployee Chinese learning the game of
