The Christmas gift is available between dusk and midnight from Nov. 28 to Jan. 1, according to Clair J. Hadley, Southern Division manager. He said that the company will run necessary service wires to connected installed lights to the utility lines. Free Christmas lighting to communities served directly by the company is a tradition with UP&L. Last year, the utility of free provided 374,000 kilowatt-hou- rs electricity to illuminate 181,000 holiday bulbs in 148 cities and towns. Of these, some 6,880 bulbs were lighted in 24 communities in the central and southeastern Utah area. long-standi- ng '! Dear Reader: Recently paid my taxes; theyve risen again this year. Just checked over a debt I owe and was knocked to the staggering realization that Im paying 18 percent interest on the unpaid balance. My wife bought me a four dollar tie; thats as much as Ive ever paid for three ties; I think Ill sue for divorce. Just had a faulty appliance part replaced; it was still covered by the warranty guarantee, but the freight on the thing and labor on the thing cost me more than I could have purchased the whole appliance for a few years ago. Just investigated the price of dying; unless my wife can sue someone for killing me, shell have to borrow beyond my present insurance to get me planted. I found I can purchase me a toupee at a novelty, cheaper than I can get a haircut. Looked at a piece of round steak, 0 didnt buy it) about the size of my right hand, price tag $1.50. I could go on and on about the horrors H ' ? the desk of the Superintendent From of our present day inflation, but Ive probably already got some of you sobbing out loud. Ive been milling a plan around in my mind that I know wont work, but let me present it to you: Start with Dick Nixon, everyone take a cut in salary of 10 percent. Even cut the president of General Motors who is a $700,000 man; then cut all commodities, rent, taxes, freight, travel expenses and embalming fluid, etc. etc. etc. 10 percent. That should slow things down. The idea is stupid isnt it? Yet Uncle Sammy can slap a 10 percent sur tax on all of us, just why cant the same kind of principle work just the opposite? Im willing; they can take 10 percent of my salary; thats all I get home with anyway. The Nebo School District implemented a teacher aide policy on September 1, 1970 after considerable study by a committee of teachers and administrators. The policy entitled, Nebo School District Teacher Aide Policies, Regulations and Tasks," is a four page single spaced document containing general information and eighty-seve- n specific tasks outlined for teacher aides. The list is not inclusive but is designed to suggest the scope and range of the aides role. The general policy on staff utilization states, In order to provide differentiated services and programs to meet the individualized needs of all pupils, it is essential to utilize all personnel at their highest levels of competence. Therefore, whenever possible, teacher aides may be made available, thus making possible wiser utilization of the teachers time, talents and specialization." A general statement of the teacher aides duties states, ASSISTS school teachers in the performance of their teaching functions by performing a wide variety of duties; does related work as required." The underlining is part of the policy. The policy continues with some general requirements for aides, Good general intelligence; ability to establish good relationships with children and others; familiarity with classroom routine; good background or knowledge in clerical aptitude; resourcefulness in conducting activities indirectly related to the teaching ng THE BODY SHOP IS OPEN process; neat personal appearance; ability 'o maintain discipline; tact, courtesy; good judgement; good physical condition. Teacher aides do not receive teacher fringe benefits. They are hired on a year to year basis and are paid an hourly rate of $1,65 during their first year of employment, $1.71 per hour the second year and $1.78 per hour their third year and each year thereafter. Principals work with the Director of Instruction in the selection of aides. In Nebo many, in fact most, of the paid aides are certified teachers. We do not like to take advantage of certified teachers by employing them as aides at a salary considerably less than that of a teacher. But, with an oversupply of young women wanting to support their husband at the BYU and others unable to find employment as teachers in the area, we do employ them as aides at their insistence. Many of them indicate they would rather be employed in an aide position than at jobs unrelated to education such as nurses, sales clerks, secretaries, etc. We feel that when we do have a position to fill that we are obligated to employ the best qualified person who applies for the position. So, yes, many of our aides are qualified teachers. We do have a chance to evaluate their work and many of them are employed as teachers when vacancies exist. Since we did not get to cover the specific tasks in this article, we wiU cover them next week. I hope that you will ask questions and analyze what we are doing. Upon request, an appointment can be made for you to visit a program utilizing teacher aides. 4to(wvva53 franks SMOKED PICNICS KA)QicboCORND BESF '7sr--' CLQRPX, flWWMWT fl&nie3ib PEACHES GW t H LOAF MALES 3 MOP - 0 WmUA I NSTftMT CQCOtK REASONS FOR ENROLLING IN BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY EVENING CLASSES.
