Sulfuric acid produced from acid--anoth- the smelters gases is used extensively in Intermountain industry as well as in Kennecotts own mine leaching and copper refining operations. The new $8 million facility was begun July 22, 1969 on a schedule designed to capture additional sulfuric dioxide before onset of this winters inversion period. The plant has been undergoing extensive performance tests since it first produced acid September 18 this year. Ore from Bingham Canyon is sulfide, meaning that it contains compounds of sulfur with metallic elements. During the smelting process, sulfur dioxide is emitted from the reverberatory furnaces and con comes are runon batch processes, accounting for variations in acid plant feed. The new contact acid plant therefore is designed to operate within wide fluctuations 2 to 8 sulfur of sulfur dioxide content of input gases, with an average of 47c. The Utah smelters first acid plant was erected in 1937, designed to operate on roaster gas and produce 100 tons of sulfuric acid daily. Gases from smelter converter operations were first utilized for sulfuric acid production in 1944. Unfair treatment to prisoners of war I - The family of Major Franklin A Caras recently presented a program at Spring-vill- e High School to make the students and faculty aware of the treatment our prisoners of war are receiving in Viet Nam. Mrs. Caras has not been contacted as to the whereabouts of her husband for three years and eight months. Through research the Caras family has found that the prisoners of war are the recipients of inhumane treatment. Some of our soldiers have lost as much as one hundred pounds in the space of only a few months. Correspondence by mail is useless because letters never get to their de tination. Mrs. Caras figures that had the mail gotten through, she would have over 250 letters from her husband. At the present time, she hasnt received one letter in almost four years. The students at Springville High School have taken action to prevent further cruel treatment of our prisoners in Viet Nam. A scroll has been made and signed by over 700 students, which will be sent to the North Vietnamese delegation in Paris France. A similar scroll will be sent by the Junior High School and Middle School. The Caras family will be sponsored by SHS to perform at the Junior High School, the Middle School, and also the Elementary schools in Springville. The students have also sent letters to Senator Bennett, Senator Moss, Representative Lloyd and Representative McKay urging them to put politics aside and work for the release of Americas more than 1500 prisoners of war. Mike Stansfield, student body president of Springville High School, urges all region four schools to get involved in similar programs to help our American prisoners of war. Efforts to recover sulfur dioxide in converter gases as sulfuric acid were continued, and as design and operating knowledge expanded, larger acid plants were installed. The smelter now has the capability to recapture all of the sulfur dioxide available from the converter flue system. The largest sulfuric acid user in the Intermountain area is the phosphate rock fertilizer industry. Hospital Happenings Visiting policies at any hospital are primarily established with the welfare of the patient in mind. Many citizens have suggested that Payson Hospital extend their visiting hours over a longer period of time during the day. This is impractical at the present time because: (1) even though one patient in a room has reached the point where they can enjoy quite a bit of company, someone else in the room is not in that condition and visitors can often be very disturbing to them and even detrimental to their recovery; (2) the Payson Hospital does not have sufficient volunteer help to take care of visiting Moisture fall Precipitation for November, 1970, could safely be called the wettest November on record, according to W. Robert Phelps, U. S. volunteer weather observer in Payson. Measurements of a whopping 3.45 inches of moisture for the Payson weather station, located on the east bench, and only a small part of this was snow, say a couple of inches. If this had been aU snow, Mr. Phelps stated, it would have been about three feet. Going back five years, the only months approaching November, 1970, were April, 1968, with 3.30 inches and December, 1966 with 3.15 inches. This has been a very wet autumn. In September, October and November measurements totaled 7.25 inches or six months average moisture in three months. Two months of the water year, which begins Oct. first and November totaled 5.48 inches compared to the same two months ir. As a matter of public information, visiting hours at Payson Hospital are now in the afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.tothe general hospital, but DOES NOT include Maternity, which will maintain the visiting hour of from 3:00 to 4:00p.m. The evening visiting hours will remain as previously, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. The restrictions for age of visitors is 12 years for the general hospital and 14 years of age for those visiting Maternity patients. When policies are newly established the general public usually is very cooperative with observance of these policies. However, with the passing of time, they become somewhat lax and seem inclined to think that special permission should be made for them in each individual case. Please be reminded that for the benefit of the patient we must observe these visiting policies. Some patients have even requested that visiting policies be more strictly enforced because they do not feel like entertaining visitors and they will not ask their visitors to leave or not to come to see them, no matter how sick they are. Visitors should be limited to two at one time. It is also recommended that if you intend on visiting more than one area of the hospital that you visit the maternity area FIRST, going to the other areas following. Please feel welcome to visit your friends and loved ones at the Hospital. We want you to feel welcome. But, please visit within reason, without infringing on the rights of others. Interested and concerned friends, neighbors, and family, wont you please help the patient and the nurse in observing visiting procedures for the benefit of those who are recovering from an illness in our Hospital.
