Show THE presently getting top priority from Supt. Joe Reidhead, Boyd Goodrich, and Principal George Puckett. Since Joe Worthens decision to concentrate on full time math teaching, widespread interest has been shown in the Head Basketball Coaching job. Many applicants have been received to date at the Superintendants office. Former BYU basketball players, others from elsewhere in Utah and California, have all indicated a strong desire to take over the direction of the Lion basketbaH fortunes for the 1970-7- 1 season. We understand one of the early candidates is lacking in the necessary Head Coaching Credentials, and therefore in spite of enthusiasm on the part of some of the local sports figures, should be ruled out. It may not seem fair to be so dogmatic about the situation, but in the organized world in which we live there are rules and regulations. Perhaps at times we gripe over their obvious numbers, and interference with our personal freedoms, but as long as we continually urge upholding tlfe law, and rule of government, then we should be willing to apply Courtesy boat examination There will be a Courtesy Motorboat Examination at the Timp Marina-- - American Fork, Utah -- - on April 11. 1970, 12:00 noon till 7:00 p.m. out if you have the Find Legal requirements to receive the Seal of Safety Its Free. 7:30 p.m. the same evening of the examination there will be a public education class concerning boating safety. The requirement for teaching is stringently adhered to in the hiring of teachers. Those who havent finished an accredited coUege or university, or having finished, fail to complete the necessary work to obtain a teaching certificate, certainly would never approach the administration for a teaching position. As long as qualified people are available, we should follow thissamepro-cedur- e in selection of a coach. Anyone who has a burning desire to coach, need only complete the necessary semester hours to obtain this certification, and then apply as vacancies occur. Many of us are so busy most of the time, we fail to find time to take on the extra work involved in this endeavour, for others, the need to work part time after school hours, and during vacation, prevent the pursuit of additional certification. However, if qualified people are applying for the position, they should be given due consideration, and the man best qualified, should receive the call to handle basketball. Selection should be left to those who have been placed in responsible positions, with the specific task of handling situations such as this. Pressure groups, for anyone, should not have a voice, because the new coach should be able to stand on his own two feet, without owing allegiance to one group or another, but rather to the It school and community as a whole. may well be that after many years of seemingjy deemphasis of basketball, Pay-so- n ''is on the verge of great Year with a new coach. This was the indication of Joe Worthen in announcing his resignation, and the consensus of those who have watched the Lions during the last season. The upcoming team, composed of this years Sophs and Juniors, may well be the best in many a year. The future of many fine young men may well rest with the new coach. Young men who love basketball, and have more than average ability, should be playing under the finest coach available.
