OUR STRENGTH OUR SOIL NEWS OF NEBO SOIL CONSERVATION A Soil survey to delineate and map the different kinds of soil in the Nebo Soil Conservation District, south half of Utah County, begins this week. This survey is being made by Soil Scientists. These men are trained to recognize different kinds of soils by the kind and arrangement of the soil layers, depth, texture (sand silt, clay), alkalinity, parent materials, and salinity. Some times laboratory analysis is required to establish differences among soils. The soil scientists accomplish the work by boring holes with a soil auger and examining the various layers of soil to a depth of at least five feet. This survey is part of a n-wide system of soil classification. It is called the National Cooperative Soil Survey. Each of the different soils is described and given a name Generally the soil is given the name of the locality where it was first described. The survey and uniform naming of soils makes it possible to extend the results of research, crop response, fertilizer trails from one place to another on similar soils. People in America live and eat better than in any other nation on earth. Food is better bargain today than at any time in the history of man. Why? Because today man understands h i s environment better than ever before and his association in that environment. These surveys are being made to further our knowledge of the soils of this area. This is being done in the interests of our agriculture and to insure iur American Way of Life. The Soil Conservation Service and the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station organizations are cooperating to make these surveys and record the data on aerial photographs. The soil survey team is composed of a party of four Soil scientists, with John Swenson of Provo as party leader. Warren Bendixen is worke ing in the vicinity of and Benjamin. Sometimes, however, this will not be possible. If you see someone hiking through your farm, stopping occasionally to bore a hole and examine the soil, you will know what he is doing. The fellows will exercise all caution not io damage crops, fences or distrub livestock. The value of the survey on your farm will be enhanced in your particular case if you will take the time to go with the Surveyor and examine your soil with him. It can be an enlightening experience. Snell Olson of Spanish Fork and his brother Alden have completed the leveling of 35 acres on their farm this spring and plan the installation of about 2000 feet of concrete ditch. John Daniels of Payson is planning to pour about 600 feet in the near future. Clair Anderson and his Father, Otto, are in the processes of placing about 2000 feet of concrete canal. Mark B. Anderson is duplicating this process on his farm in Lake Shore. Wallace Sorenson of Palmyra has just completed placing 3000 feet of new concrete ditch. This ditch will also serve Hans who worked very closely with Wallace, and will serve Leo Banks on the Lower Lake Ditch, a part of the West Fields Irrigation Co. Ralph Kester and his son Terry are working over the West Payson farm to develop a Conservation Plan. They are planning the development of a y pasture program. Lee and Garth Boswell of Goshen have both completed the installation of needed sections of concrete canals on their farms.
