An Open House will be held in his honor on Friday June 27 from 4 to 6 pm in the Commissioner’s Room of the Sevier County Courthouse at 250 North Main Richfield The public is invited to attend In his 3 years as Livestock Specialist Matthews has worked with woolgrowers and cattlemen throughout the State of Utah He served as chairman of the Utah Sheep Task Force and of the Utah Beef Improvement Association He has been involved with the bull testing program that annually attracts beef producers from all over Utah and surrounding states He has worked closely with the Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show committee and conducted the carcass contests in several counties for many years He also assisted numerous and FFA liveyouth with their stock projects Matthews has organized educational programs for livestock producers organizations and county agents in the Southwest District and provided training to many producers on an dividual basis He assisted in developing selection and breeding programs feeding ration and management systems and marketing for sheep beef cattle and swine In 1993 Matthews filled a shortterm assignment in Kalmyk Russia helping private sheep farmers improve their lambing management skills In 1979 he went to Lesoto Africa to evaluate a project in soil conservation From 1968 to 1970 he served as Sheep Specialist on the UtahUSAID Agricultural Development Team in Bolivia and worked on genetic provement feeding lambs improving shearing techniques and improving management for Bolivian conditions On Saturday June 14 Keith and Delene Bartholomew and family attended a Golden Wedding party in Salt Lake City for their parents Clarence and Beth Christiansen On Friday June 20 the Bartholomew’s attended the wedding of their niece Rebecca Hansen the wedding dinner and also the reception that night Saturday June 21 Alan and Vickie King went to Colorado where Alan played in the softball tournament All the players were 40 years and older Alan’s team took second Marie Lyman had a happy birthday Sunday with her family They enjoyed a lasagna dinner They played games and did some painting and just enjoyed having the family together Friday June 20 Annette Newman and children along with 14 MIA girls and 5 leaders of Las Vegas came to Utah and went to Manti and saw the pageant and really enjoyed it Then they came to Fayette and stayed over night with Annette’s parents Richard and Ann Harrop Saturday June 2 Richard and Ann went to Ogden to the 4th Ward choir reunion This choir was organized when Richard was a young man There were over 50 of the members that came back to the reunion this year They practiced their songs of long ago On Sunday they presented the program for Sacrament Meeting in their old ward Saturday June 21 Brent and Carla Mellor hosted the Glen Lee Family reunion at their home All of Glen’s children and their families came and enjoyed aday together Carla’s brother Steven Lee’s daughter Jamil is visiting this week with her cousin Wendy Mellor Mr and Mrs Cecil Bown and family attended the Nielson family reunion in the Fairview Canyon on Friday and Saturday Some of the family members canoed down the San Rafael River and enjoyed the trip Visiting Thursday with Dean and Darlene Bartholomew were Paul and Nyle Matthews he Prior to that assignment served as County Agricultural Extension Agent in Unitah County for three years He also served as Livestock Farm Advisor at the University of California and as Veterinary Research Assistant at the University of Nevada Reno Matthews received the Distinguished Service Award from Utah Beef Improvement Association the Outstanding Fair Worker Award from the Utah Association of Fairs and Shows and Award of Appreciation from Columbia Sheep Breeders of America a Service Award from the Southern Utah Junior Livestock Show Meritorious Service to Award and Honorary Chapter Farmer Award from Richfield FFA He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry and a Master’s
