Show T Coal Mining Belt is Utah's most active quake area The most active earthquake area in Utah is the Coal Mining Seismic Belt This seismic belt runs from of northeast Price to Richfield Between March 14 and March 20 1996 18 different earthquakes were registered in this belt with the largest hitting about 20 miles west of Price and had a magnitude of 30 According to information from the University of Utah Seismograph Stations seven of the quakes had a magnitude of 20 or less which weren’t felt ten had a magnitude of between 20 and 30 An earthquake with a magnitude of greater than 4 can be felt by most people The Utah Geological Survey in cooperation with the US Geological Survey and the University of Utah Seismograph Stations will soon begin installing sensing instruments at seven locations in Utah The instruments will record ground accelerations during earthquakes “Engineers w ill use the data to design more buildings and to evaluate the adequacy of Utah building codes” said Frank Ashland a geologist with the Utah Geological Survey “Engineers currently use data from other areas such as California in the design of Utah buildings which is questionable” The instruments w ill be spaced about 30 miles apart along a roughly corridor called the Intermounlain Seismic Belt This zone represents the area of greatest earthquake risk that crosses Utah The first instruments will be located in Tremonton Draper Kaysvillc Sanlaquin Gunnison Beaver and St George Also wherever and whenev er seismic waves rumble University of Utah scientists will roam with portable seismographs to map the region's subsurface ebb and flow Because the U’s regional seismic network of 100 permanent stations that extends from northwestern Wyoming to southern Utah are too spread out to offer the fine details of a quake the scientists w ill travel to a particular area after a quake with portable units and map the origin points as w ell as study subsurface fault patterns Dr Walter J Arabasz dircctorof the U’s Seismograph Stations says the scientists travel to earthquake sites because when a particular locale “turns on" w ith earthquake activity valuable information about seismic wave propagation and the state of stress in the rocks can be recorded "We chase earthquakes because that’s w here the action is - tire chance to add to our understanding of how w here and w In earthquakes occur in our region" said Arabasz These “earthquakes of opportunity” provide seismologists with pieces to the puzzle of quantifying the earthquake threat in the West Arabasz is chair of the Council of the National Seismic Society a consortium of 27 US institutions that operate national regional and local seismic networks An immediate goal of the council is to develop an intefor rapid earthgrated nationw ide s stem of seismographic quake response and scientific research Salina SunGunnison and School: Home Eskelsen President Utah Education Association Lily We always had interesting Current My students get extra credit points in social studies for reporting on news articles And while we’ve Events had on reports launches space shuttle Peace Talks and local blood drives we've also heard about Elvis son papers that proved its father was Prince Charles of England one should wonder why Tom Brokaw Nightly News) And teach them to wonder at the news way they might question tabloid television shows Today it goes beyond print There isn't a network on television that doesn't have some program devoted to bcliev sensation- alism I cal don't want children to be cyni- world of possibilities want them to be fools to understand what a critical ear I a claim it Froot Loops Nevada clubs planning to attend Classic Bow Ties are Charioteers Yard Doggz Golden Memories Las Vegas Model and Fastway But I w Donut Derelicts i Needed by Trooper Terry C Smith Utah Highway Patrol Public Information and Education Officer In 1993 2364 youths ages died in crashes That’s just the number that died Thousands more were injured and hospitalized Young drivers have a greater risk of injury or death with lower alcohol levels than older drivers That’s why Utah's Not a Drop law is such a great tool A recent study of 12 states with lower limits for youth showed a 20 reduction in crashes This is a very significant drop The threat of losing their license is a big deterrent for young people who place such a high value on being able to drive To be effective a zero tolerance law allows a police officer to require a breath test from a driver under the age of 2 if the officer has probable cause to believe that the driver has been drinking If the driver refuses the test or the test reveals an alcohol level the driver should be subject to sanctions including the loss of his or her driver’s licence Trusting I don't ant them want them to explore I want them to be able to mentally dissect a proposed theory and see its strengths and its w caknesses Teach your children to question what they hear in the news or on television or even from the kid next door Teach them that there are people who will say just about anything to on hand for the event The Zions Park Rod Run organized by the Southern Utah Canyon Cruisers will leave Hurricane on Easter Sunday The Rod Run is not a competition event but a scenic drive through Hurricane Valley and Zion National Paric The day w ill feature a “poker run" with check points throughout the morning The winner of the run will receive a rebuilt transmission from Ray's Auto Service Center in La Verkin Entry fee for the car show includes on April 5th the car show and free tickets to the drag races on April 6th the Rod Run Ester Sunday dash plague goody bag and event Entries w ill be accepted until 10 am April 6th An admission fee will be charged for spectators with discount price rales for senior citizens and students Discount coupons to the Drag Races w ill be available for all paid spectators of the show For more information on the car show and drag races call Bob Sines at (801) We’re saying NO’ for all me right reasons Eating From By Dr Marjorie Hogan (NAPS) —Americans face a bar- rage of health and fitness advice: Eat better get in shape cut dietary fat intake Most of us want to do what’s best but how do you sort through all the nutrition information and create a healthful eating plan when it’s tricky enough to get any sort of meal on the table?
