Show The juvenile court system how does it work? Why Do We Celebrate Columbus Day? Rail! by Cindy Andre ason in juvenile The rise Columbus Day is celebrated in memory of an Italian Explorer named Christopher Columbus who is given credit for being the discoverer of America He not only started the a great age of exploration but he opened the gateway to two previously unknown continents Columbus was bom in Genoa Italy in 1451 He became a sailor at a charts and maps he concluded that Asia could be After several countries refused to fund such a trip he talked Queen Isabella of Spain into subsidizing the trip She gave him three small ships: The Nina The Pinta and The Santa Maria had trouble recruiting men set sail west carrying 88 men Columbus underestimated the voyage smaller than it really was Columbus to sail but on he for he thought August 3rd of 1492 the world was much To keep his crew happy he wrote on the ships records that they had more food and water than what they really had However in his diary he wrote how bad things really were Near the end they were almost out of water and food Columbus continued his route westward Near October 7 his crew wanted to turn back and threatened mutiny unless he did Columbus said that if they didn't come to land in the next few days they would return to Spain He offered a reward to the first person to see land On October 12 1492 Roderigo de Triana from aboard the Pinta spotted land The land he saw was the island of Guahanni inhabited by the Arawok Indians Columbus renamed the island San Salvador which means “Holy Savior” In the weeks that followed Columbus landed on Cuba which he named Juana and Hispanolia which he believed to be Cipango (Japan) Columbus refused to acknowledge that he had discovered a new land He believed he had found an all water route to Asia He returned to Spain as a hero Queen Isabella rewarded him with the title “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” Columbus began making plans for a second voyage He left Immediately in September of 1493 with 17 ships and 1500 men He explored the islands of Dominica Guadeloupe Antigua and Puerta Rico He again returned to Spain to have honors leaped upon him by Queen Isabella Columbus made his third and fourth voyages in 1498 and 1502 Meanwhile Queen Isabella began to doubt Columbus’s ‘so called’ water route to Asia When Columbus returned from his fourth voyage he was stripped of his title and put into prison He died on May 20 1506 at Valladolid Columbus died still believing he had found an all water route to Asia To honor Columbus we celebrate Columbus Day on October 9 Weekly Crop Weather -- Harvesting of fruit vegetables and were the major
