the spring month of March The reaches ns Last Quarter phase on Thursday the 28ih as it approaches the New phase on Fnday March 7th This gtses us a window of dark skies better than two weeks long to observe without moonlight during parts of the night Most of the winter constellations are moving westwards earlier with each the early spring constellations rising passing night and we begin to see some of over our eastern mountains One of these is the Bootes “The Herdsman" w uh the brilliant orange star Arc turns By 22 00 hours the constellation is high enough in the sky to start observ mg by merely looking directly east Arc turns is a unique star m that it is the 4th brightest star in the heavens w ith a magnitude of and reaches culmination (zenith point at midnight) on A prtl the 27th This 0 star is located a mere 37 light years tfom us and has a diameter of 20 million miles or roughly 25 tunes that of our Sun It is also 5 times more luminous than our Sun but contains a mass that is just four times greater Arc turns is also unique because of its Luge proper motion through space with respect to our solar system At a velocity of 90 miles pet second it is traveling towards the constellation of Vugo “The Virgin" Its radial motion (approach and recession from our point of view is 3 miles per second in recession w hich w ill gradually dimmish to zero as the star passes us in space several thousands of years from now In the course of the next 500000 years Arc turns w ill fade to invisibility in its highly inclined orbit around the center of our galaxy and is presently cutting through the galactic plane Oddly its motion unlike our Sun is moving with the mainstream stars m the plane of our galaxy and thus the large relative velocity between Arc tutus and the Sun If you were living on a planet of Arc turns and looked at our Sun it would appear that we were moving away rapidly The constellation itself that looks like a kite in the sky contains many double star systems that can be viewed with just a small telescope One of the finest double stars is Epsilon Bootes also named Pulchemma consists of an primary with its companion being bluish and to some observers greenish in color It is a bit difficult to see in too small of a telescope but one with an aperture of 4 will resolse it with ease Pulchemma was derived due to its beautiful color contrast amongst all of the other multiple star systems in the This axsi some melon sky Orton “The Hunter" and Cams Major "The Large Dog” sets shortly after 0 00 hours this week and if we w ait just another hour we see the brilliant star Antares in the constellation of Scorptus rising to our southeast This relationship changes with each passing night as we approach spring and head towards summer It is tn March that w e can see both the w inter and summer constellations if one stays up throughout the night and early morning The weather is generally warmer and less humidity appears in the atmosphere giving nice observing conditions Just a quick report op the eclipse of the Moon this past week that was blocked somewhat here in the southern part of Nlillard County and nicely observable in the northern part for some time before it became overcast also The author did not get any photographs but did see various phases of it as breaks in the cloud cover permitted At totality its color was a nice orange red and would have nude some beautiful 35mm color prints Some friends of the author that live or work at the power plant phoned me to give a status of the ongoing eclipse The star chart of Bootes is given below to assist in locating the objects covered in this text breastteedingbasics org Deanne Francis RN 1BCIC Shannon F Clegg RN IBClC lntermouutain Healthcare lCCE MBA Grand Central Continued from front page This pass was very annoying to teamsters not only because there was a steep upward gradient to climb but also in that that gradient was on “slick rock" at a ith steel tire House Range looking for a pass or a canyon breaking through As he threaded his w ay along about seven miles south a low place attracted his notice but no canyon as cut through on the east side lnv estigaling on riding to the edge of the low place w hat w as his astonishment to see cutting sharply down into the mountains the beginning of a canyon Now if it only cut through! hy not try it?
