Festival this weekend O Road of Destiny The Grand Central Highway Draper by Dean Millard County was to provide an essential part of the asphalt linkage of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans The Grand Central Highway was already in existence from Delta to Baker NV It covered the desert and passed through the mountains of the west desert with little adverse effect from winter storms The fearful heat of summer only lasted a couple of months At 8 feet w ide on the crest and 20 feet wide at the base this 100 miles of road would speed travelers and freight across the Beehive state on their way to California or east to Massachusetts On its westward track it left Delta and continued a mere five miles to Hinckley where it abruptly turned south along Main Street to afford travelers the opportunity to solicit the retail establishments before heading across this scenic though arid stretch of the heart of the Great Basin One can sull travel on 500 South west from Hinckley's Main Street on the old highw ay It crosses modem 6&50 between mile markers 78 and 79 Travel on the old route comes to an abrupt halt at an open drain where the bridge has been removed Detouring back to 6&50 one can skirt the drain and get back on course just before mile marker 76 Part of this road was once known as “No Man’s Road” — as no man ever knew after a rain if he w ould get through or not Grading and grav el laid over the top of the original w agon ruts changed the reliability of the road Back to the original Grand Central it takes off directly west heading for Marjum Pass Across the old Bonneville lakebed shadscale it is just clay greasewood and solitude until the road jackrabbits winds into Marjum Pass Occasional bands of antelope and a wild horse or two add to the scenery Marjum Pass with its massive limestone cliffs and forest relieves the monotony of the flats It harbors more wildlife and a rich local history It is a road taken for granted by all familiar with it but a little over a 100 years ago it was unknown to many Today’s route was mystery The name itself is an enigma No word like it in English Spanish or Piute Frank A Beckwith shared this story about Maij urn’s name in Millard and Nearby: “A young man in Deseret had been William Valentine christened But his playmates wouldn't use that handle and fitted their own made-unickname to him He was dubbed ‘Marjum’ from w hat source the word was got only youngsters at play can answer “Maijum and his dad had often freighted from the group of towns in Millard to its west settlements and beyond even to Pioche through the then only existent route namely through Antelope Pass on Then water at Tule Swazey Mountain Springs at Cowboy Pass at Garrison Spring must be around the comer 30000 Lesser Snow Geese and their avian friends
