High even though it meant long bus ndes every day In 1959 Mary enrolled at East Los Angeles College majoring in sociology Since she still needed transportation she arranged to carpool to school with an old family acquaintance who just started at ELAC from the Whittier Apostolic Church - Manny Perez After a couple of years of study and many good times Manny and Mary decided to get married In 1961 Manny got his AS Degree in May and they were married on July 8 1961 They both put their studies on hold and set out to establish their life together Mary worked as a clerk typist and Manny as a carpenter and then as a draftsman Soon they had two beautiful daughters and had bought their first home When Manny wanted to return to school full time Mary unselfishly agreed to rent out their house for a while to save money to make ends meet After Manny graduated in 1968 Mary returned to her studies and in 1975 she graduated from Fullerton State University in Elementary Education This wasjust a few months before their son Manuel M ichael was bom and the same year they moved to their present home in Whittier She started student teaching the next year Her first assignment as a certificated relocating to Utah for about three years Before making their final decision Manny took the family to Delta for a visit in late spnng Mary was impressed by the clean air and the fnendly people but what she really liked was the large number of children and young people in town The three years became six and Mary taught in the Millard School Distnct five of six years She basically put up with the stay in Utah although she liked the people and the slow pace There were almost weekly trips to the big city to the nearest Mall and Mary even tned learning how to ski But Mary hated the cold and snow1 her classrooms and just these past few weeks she taught us all how to be courageous and how to trust in God' Mary loved to travel and in spite of a fear of flying she and her family enjoyed several trips to Mexico and Hawaii a cross country trip to Niagara Falls cruises to Mexico and Hawaii and a month long tour of Europe Just five months ago Mary and Manny visited Cancun Mexico for the first time Her favorite trips however were motoring and moteling it up the coast to San Simeon to Yosemite or Arizona She loved to take drives and as late as last week Manny would take her for daily drives to the beach the mountains or just to the Mall Mary’s life and values were centered around her faith in God her family and teaching As a master teacher she touched the lives of her family her students
