Qj) One of the most frequent asked questions about where we live when we say that we live tn the Milky Way galaxy is what does our galaxy look like? Often it is difficult to explain without pictures or at least a drawing of some type generally like the one shown below As we look towards the constellation of Sagittarius we art looking into the dense nucleus of our galaxy As we peer towards the constellation of Coma Berenices near the bright star Arcturus we are looking upwards (North Galactic Pole) and out of our galaxy since we live about 5000 light years from its center in an arm of die spiral known as the “Orion Arm” Conversely as we look into the constellation of Sculptor (not visible from the United States) in the Southern Hemisphere we find the South Galactic Pole Many might think that our North Star Potans in Ursa Minor (The Little Dipper) is the NGP but due to our position in the Orton Arm with relative to our position here on our planet! The plane of our galaxy ts determined by its rotational axis in which the entire system makes one revolution every 225 million years If astronomers ne correct in their determination of the age of our Solar System then our spiral galaxy has made nearly 18 rotations in its lifetime The photograph to the right is an arbsts rendition of our Spiral Galaxy from an estimated distance of about 500000 light years Note the spiral arms that appear as some pyrotechnic displays seen on July 4th Weather Conquering Chemical Dependancy and Chemical Dependancy Group 7pm 390 est Center Fillmore Fourth Tuesday Material Curls Sewing Guild 7pm 100 North 230 West Delta School of Judge 0sann9 gaimgffansQa Moms Kelly pm (fatted) gnrfl ffl gPii) from us During this last week of June and the Red Planet Mar now receding away after its closest approach on Thursday die 21 we have a fair opportunity to do some dark sky observing Our Moon will reach its First Quarter phase on W ednesday the 27" date this on Moonnse faint objects ai 21 21 hours Hid will interfere with out observing 9 hows so that only die early morning hours will be will be at 13 OSandmoonsetatOl useful for observing those little “fuzzies" in deep space that own a modest Although Mars is moving from us rapidly for those of our readers telescope it is still within decent view if one owns some good high power eyepieces see any details Generally magnifications in the realm of 200 X or better will be needed to such as the polar ice caps and dust storms raging across the planet’s surface In conjuncmake tion with high power oculars filters of various colors will be extremely useful to s opposition Mar missed those that out the wispy clouds and colors on the surface For will be in August of 2003 before we get this opportunity again with the Earth shorter as we By the end of this month on the 30 out day will be about five minutes head towards autumn Most of us will not notice this gradual change until die end of The graph September when each passing day will shorten by about three minutes at out latitude here in depict below shows the length of day covering the full year 200 the distances between the months Delta Utah Use a ruler or straight edge to shown at the bottom of the chart and then draw a vertical line upward to intersect with the curve in the graph Once this point is determined draw a line horizontally and at a should be able to right angle to the left to read the length of day with practice you calculate this within a few minutes rtit'ir au fur !
