funds to public schools for school improvements as approved by the Board of Education and county schools are choosing a variety of ways to enhance their programs At Delta High Principal Dave Noah determined the greatest need was to improve students’ writing skills and English teachers have been busy putplan to meet that ting together a goal “We have organized a strategic plan o make writing a good experience for students and make them less apprehensive about the required PASS program This year’s focus has been on training teachers in the writing process and developing curriculum” said DHS English teacher Jane Beckwith “Part of our fund has purchased supplemental writing materials for the library including books and videos on improving basic skills” DHS English teachers also attended a retreat in February and March with Panguitch High School teacherson how to make writing easier for students to improve their abilities During the next school year they will expand the program and get students more involved in the process “ is the state's new accountability system It lets educators know along the way what students are learning and measures their skills and knowledge” said Superintendent Ray Timothy “Many teachers seem afraid of it but most of the things required are things we are already doirg think Delta High’s focus on writing is a great thing and will be helpful" makes up the assessment and data for reporting results of Utah’s public schools performance It consists of seven major assessment programs including a core assessment criterion reading diagnostic instruments direct writing assessment the current SAT test basic skills competency alternate assessment for special needs and the National Association of Educational progress All the tests have different purposes and yield different formation about students’ performance Beginning with the class of 2005 all students must pass the Utah Basic Skills Competency Test and other graduation requirements to receive a high school ploma The test includes three major sections reading writing and math Tenth grade students will take the test in the spring each year Once students pass a section of the test it does not have to be retaken However students may retake sections as often as needed to pass The tests are not timed and total testing time is between four and six hours Any student that does not pass the COPY 1 Basic Skills Competency Test at graduation is eligible to receive a certificate of completion but not a diploma according to Timothy The test includes multiple choice and constructed response questions requiring students to think of a sponse rather than choosing an answer Improving students’ writing skills is an important focus at Delta High and their new strategic
