some of the summer constellation as the night progresses past midnight Orion and Cams Major hav e long set over our western horizon and we now see Centaurus Scorpio and Sagittarius in the south and southeast respectively If we remain up past 2 am these three constellations are the most dominant in the southern portion of our sky with the great Milky ay almost directly overhead During the w eek w e have an opportune time for deeply sky observ ing since the moon and for a few days towards the weekend it only will be in its “New” phase on the appears as a slim crescent to the west One of the more interesting constellations that makes it appearance around midnight It is one of several constellations that actually has the appearis Cygnus “The Swan’’ ance of a large bird with its wings outstretched as the diagram shows below The Milky ay runs straight through this astcrism with its millions of pinpoint stars Cygnus rises to our northeast and is marked with several bright stars Notably the stars Deneb and 26 and 3 09 magnitudes respectively that also mark the tail and Albireo being of head ol the great swan in the sky The star Deneb is the 19® brightest star in the heavens and marks the tail of the bird The name of the star is from Al Dhanab al Dajajah which in Medieval Arabic Times signifies 'The Hen’s Tail” Deneb is one of the greatest supergiant stars known and is probably equaled only by Rigel in the constellation of Orion amongst all of the first is 60000 times that ofour Sun with an absolute magnitude stars Its actually luminosity If this star were 10 parsecs (32 6 light years) away from us it would magnitude of 7 he about 14 time brighter than the plant Venus and would rival our moon in brightness when it is in its first quarter phase Its mass however is only 25 times greater than our Sun and is about 1600 light years away from us This star is considered to be the chief source of illumination for the huge “North American Nebula’’ NGC 7000 which lies three degrees to the east Albireo is one of the most beautiful double stars in the sky considered by many observers to be the finest in the heavens for a small telescope The brighter star is a golden yellow or topaz with its companion being a sapphire color of the 5 magnitude Even a good pair of binoculars will split the pair if you can steady them on a clear crisp night Best view attained by the author was with a six inches of aperture telescope and a magnification of 45X Albireo is abu it 410 light years from us with the primary star 760 times greater th in our Sun and the Companion 20 times greater hav ing a luminosity The area of Cygnus is so rich in multiple star systems nebula and other deep sky objects that the author could fill the newspaper with such a listening However the one object that can been seen with a modist sized telescope is the great Veil Nebula A photograph of this is also shown below Some of the brighter portions of this nebula can be seen with just a pair of 7X50 binoculars It takes a minimum of six to eight inches of aperture under erv low magnification to make out its filamentary structure Its designation on the chart is NGC 6960 and NGC 6992 This nebula is about 500 light years from us and covers a diameter in the sky of about 70 light ears It is the results os a supernova ears ago and is still expanding to this day star that exploded well ov cr Cygnus is a remarkable constellation that is well worth spending a great deal of ones observing time either with binoculars or a rich field low power telescope on a dark moonless night Lunch workers Classified Professional School Employee Week Governor Michael O Leavitt has declared the week of April 30 through May 6 2000 as Utah Classified Protes'ional School Employee Week thing as a "typical” rape or rape victim number of common elements and unique and temfy ing experience How e er there arc a will help husbands fathers misconceptions associated nh rape an awareness ol which and other family members be more sensitive to what the victim has been through To begin with it cannot be overstated that rape is not the same as "making love” Although the majority of completed rapes involve vaginal penetration this occurs in a state of emotional terror w ithout the oman giv ing consent It is a complete misconception to believe that women "secretly desire” to be raped or taken by force Rape is a total violation of a woman’s rights over her own body and ol her ability to make a sexual choice Indeed from the woman’s point of view the sexual dimension of rape often assumes lesser importance than the lolent aspects Rape is fundamentally an act of violence Many rapes involve threats of bodily harm and often the woman suffers severe physical injury Threats of violence are made even worse by the presence of a weapon and intimidating verbal abuse Any implication that the woman “asked for” or enjoyed the experience or that rape and making love are the same is a basic misconception In the context of a dating relationship - a situation w here large numbers of rapes occur the rape still represents a violent assault and not something which the victim wants or enjoy s It is never appropriate to suggest that a woman somehow benefits from being the target of a sexual assault A related fact is that the woman is absolutely not responsible for her victimization Men often mistakenly assume that victims could prevent rape by avoiding certain social situations by dressing differently or by putting up a fight This mistaken assumption may be even greater if the victim exhibits no visible physical injuries Some males incorrectly believe that if she didn’t actively resist the attack she must have given tacit consent Such a belief suggests that the ictim is responsible for the assault The truth is that virtually anyone placed in a situation can be paralyzed by fear or recognize the futility of physical resistance Furthermore rape occurs at all hours of the day or night and in irtuaily any setting that a she is partially responsible including one’s own home or public place Believirg only places emotional distance between the ictim and her husband or boy friend at a time when his support is most needed This causes unnecessary feelings of guilt anger and isolation Ultimately blaming her prolongs her recov ery and adds great strain to the relationship Finally it is important to realize that rape can happen to anyone regardless of age income appearance or personal reputation It is true that the majority of rapes victims r are single women between the ages of fourteen and However there is no w ay to predict w hich w omen are likely to be selected as ictims At the Rape Recovery Center in Salt Lake City the youngest rape victim is a old boy and the oldest a woman in her eighties The one common element is that rape is a frightening and degrading experience ictims require a period of Mme to recov er Furthermore we know that men also are affected deeply by the rape of a loved one that men can learn to understand her victimization and that they can and often do act in a manner contributing to her recovery If you or someone you know has been the victim of rape or sexual assault encourage them to seek help Not dealing with the assault w ill not make its effects go away New crisis line number s Horizons’ or or come into our
