Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children in Utah Children can drown in pools spas buckets streams bath tubs and anything else that holds water Children must be supervised at all times when they are near water Being distracted for even a split moment can result in a tragedy The Utah Safety Council offers the following tips to help prevent drowning s: Never leave a child alone in the bathtub even for a moment to answer the phone or door This scenario too often results in a fatality Keep toilet lids closed and youngsters out of the bathroom except when supervised km buckets away from Keep children children can fall in head first and drown in just a few inches of liquid Make sure all buckets are emptied and stored away from children after household chores are done Wading pools should be supervised and emptied promptly after use Don't assume that because your child has had swimming lessons that They should never they are go near or play in open water without approved supervision Water can be fun and is a good way to cool off but remember the dangers associated with it If you would like more information on water safety call the Utah Safety Council at (801) outside Salt or Lake Metro No fine print No asterisk No disclaimer There is a time limit though It s only free for the next one hundred years Is that a problem? USU Extension For most of us junk mail and junk telephone calls used to be a minor annoyance In the last five years they have become a major irritant They call about dinner time to be sure you are home a time when you're also likely to be getting a call from someone you really want to talk to which I Charitable organizations previously respected started doubling their efforts once they got a small donation from me No "Thanks lor contri we hope you donate next year" But rather their response was more like “since you wanted to donate to save the whales you must also want to donate to save the baby seals long horn sheep coyotes marmots and penguins" If you belong to any sort of alumni association you know that it is belter at tracking you down than the IRS They generally come at you through both mail and telephone The whole process is beginning to resemble a pyramid scheme For every one donation you get 10 new requests For every one catalog purchase you get 10 new catalogs Then if you contribute to any one of the 10 new organizations or buy from one of the 0 new catalogs you get 10 more Soon you are buried in mail This process wouldn’t be quite so irritating if these organizations just sent your name to other oiganizations you when might be interested in In reality in most they say “we sent your name” cases what they mean is “we SOLD your name” time Ninety nine percent of the when you pay for your subscription to a free fish head magazine and get your never are telephone or whatever you told that this name selling will take place The irritation factor plus the perception of wasting paper and other natural resources is starting to get more consumers angry and causing some publications to rethink their strategies Two magazines and one mail order company I came across are now providing their subscribers with lists of the organizations with which they trade or rent mailing lists These two magazines also make it easy for your name to be removed from any of these lists These are steps in the right direction but there arc still hundreds or organizations and publications that do not observe these rules of etiquette Simple Remedies help fight impetigo a common summer skin malady Soap and water and petroleum jelly may be the best first line of defense against impetigo the blistering skin infection that erupts most often in hot humid climates during the summer says a Stanford University pediatric dermatologist Dr Alfred T Lane chair and associate professor of dermatology and pediatrics says impetigo is characterized by a crust or blisters often red and that just seems to grow on the face especially around the nose or sometimes on the hands or feet Usually Lane says a scratch or insect bile exposes the victim to one of two common bacteria which infect the wound “The bacteria can exist harmlessly on the skin but cannot penetrate the skin and cause symptoms until an opening occurs” Lane notes Although impetigo may occur in any age group it is most common among children because they tend to injure their skin more often than adults Lane says About 2 to 3 percent of visits to pediatricians nationwide are for impetigo the most common bacterial skin infection in children he says The dermatologist says that washing the wound will help get rid of the bacteria that cause impetigo and then petroleum jelly will help keep the clean wound lubricated to aid in fighting the infection "There is noclear evidence antibiotics are any more effective against kqpetigo than petroleum jelly" Lane explains However he says if the infection seems to be getting worse three or four days after onset it may be lime to seek medical attention A physician can write a prescription for an effective antibiotic cream or oral medication that should fight the infection quickly “Besides being uncomfortable untreated impetigo can cause scaring and more serious infections" Lane warns Short Treatments are sometimes fine for mental health problems treatment can often help people resolve mental health problems without the need for more and expensive therapies says a clinical psychologist at Stanford University Medical Center “In recent years an increasing body of research has shown that for some problems such as depression or anxiety a course of treatment lasting three to six months can often yield excellent results" explains Bruce A Amow assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of Stanford’s Behavioral Medicine Clinic In depression for example many patients can leam to deal with their problems through discussions with a therapist who can help them change patterns of thought and behavior says Amow Similarly psychotherapies as well as medications are also available for many anxiety disorders including panic attacks fear of being in public places (agoraphobia) and social anxiety "The era when seeking psychotherapy automatically meant yean of therapy has ended for most patients New therapies have been developed in the past 5 yean that target specific problems and have proved successful for a substantial number of patients" Amow explains That doesn't eliminate the usefulness of psychotherapy in certain cases Amow says Some patients may still require lengthy interventions for particularly help with long standing interpersonal problems he maintains |
