and final race in the Utah Silver Summer Scrie was run Saturday at the Gunnison Bend Reservoir near Delta According to Promoter and Race Director Rick Wagstaff close to 120 racers participated in the five race event this summer "It went really well" said Wagstaff “We had excellent facilities and support from the county and all the local businesses organizations and private individuals” The Utah Slate Parks Department was also a big reason for the event’s success according to Wagstaff He said he appreciates all the help he received from the rangers Wagstaff said he plans to hold the series again next year at the Gunnison Bend facility He said the races went smoothly with a few exceptions Several complaints were reported by the county commission about holding races on holidays Some residents were upset on Pioneer Days because they were not able to use the reservoirThere were also some fears that this would overcrowd the facility on a regular basis Wagstaff said that should not happen “These racers have their own private watering holes close to their homes" Wagstaff said Wagstaff said the racers will not likely come back to the Gunnison Bend Reservoir except to race He said a few of the racers did stay on Sunday to play Overall State Championship winners included Nate Call who took first place in the Novice Ski Division This was a closed course and slalom for the year In the Novice Women’s Ski Division Chaundalc Cook was the first place winner Darrin Balfour won first in the Novice Runabout Division The first place winner in the Novice Sport Division was Greg Ahleen Gunnison Bend Reservoir is a good location He said he has enjoyed all of the races and wants to come back again next year Wagstaff said the races were very successful and that everyone involved was came out to join Oak City in its annual Oak City Days celebration on Saturday Darla Chappell Chairperson of Oak City Days said there were so many people that she began to panic at lunch time “We pul a thousand plates out and there were only a few left” Chappell said According to Committee Member Kenneth Christensen people usually visit Oak City Days from all over the United States Former Oak City resident Peggy Kooyman said she and her husband came back to join a family member from Japan The Kooymans recently moved to Las Vegas Nevada Chappell said all the events ran on schedule The only problem was the cancellation of the program at the Town Hall Chappell said the program was cancelled because of last minute scheduling conflicts Oak City Days has been a family tradition since 1954 The celebration began Friday evening with a Rook Tournament Saturday's events included a bike race choir concert historic town tours kids races softball and a live trout catch The celebration was topped off with a free dance Music was provided by the Moonlighters Chappell said she started planning for this year's celebration in February She said the committee met each month and began meeting once a week in August Chappell said she received a lot of help from all 12 of the committee members She said the Oak City Town Council helped with different events throughout the day on Saturday Some councilmcn took tickets at the dinner Oak City Mayor Bzo Porter even helped serve dinner Even with all the fun and tradition Chappell said putting Oak City Days together is a challenge “Yes it’s been meet By Derin Phelpt Two days of hard hitting outdoor livestock competition were featured last Friday and Saturday at the Utah State Western Riding Clubs Association's South Region Meet at the Millard Horse Arena in County Outdoor Fillmore According to Phil Robison of Fillmore members of different riding clubs from around the state competed in the 40 year old event There were 6 entrants in each event Friday night featured team events like pole bending barrels hide racing pony express and trailer racing On Saturday events included horse races pleasure events stock events and parade and drill competition “We had a good crowd" said Robison Robison said between 15 and 20 clubs participated in the meet Contestants were required to be 16 years of age or older Winners placing first through fifth place became eligible to compete in the slate finals in HcberCity September 8 and 9 Winners of Friday’s competition included a team from the Nephi Nebo Riding Club In the Water Race the team of Perry and Khristie Allred Tina Taylor Dave Johnson and Robin Jacklrn took first place In the Potato Race the team of Oz Rigby Don and Travis Brown Kerby Peterson and Alan Christensen of the Pahvant Riding Oub won first place The East Millard Riding Gub took first place in the Single Poles event Knsten Bums represented the East Millard Team in the Single Poles event The Pahvant Riding Club took first place in the Team Poles and Keyhole competitions The club was represented in the Team Poles event by Jody and Darlene Webb Valerie and Don Brown and Tracee Young In the Keyhole event the Pahvant
