Fillmore Elementary Schixd students set a new summer reading record this year when 160 summer readers qualified for the school's top award the Royal Order of the Golden Chipmunk To earn the award readers had to read at least 50 books regularly attend the and complete brary or bookmobile several others goals The readers’ names were entered in the Chip R Munk Summer Reading Club Hall of Fame and each was honored with a certificate and a $500 cash prize donated by the Fillmore Elementary PTAThc summer readers also enjoyed a party at the East Millard Swimming Pool In addition 11 students earned bad to miss this It’s really quite sjcciaL" Students at risk of school failure: What are we doing? by Mary Ann W illiams The lime was 130 on a warm Thurs day afternoon in May 1992 in a Utah school district office building A meetw ing was in a progress and the Chair as in the process of calling mil Men and women responding were representatives from the county Juvenile Court County Youth Corrections the directors of Special Education and At Risk Services for the local schixd district director of the county health services counselors from the local junior high and senior high schools county family services county substance abuse The Interagency Coordinating Council was in session According to the agenda it was lime to consider B J a student identified as “at risk” by the lixal schixd B J had been experiencing difficulty in schixd He was not learning as rapidly as others in his class He was not getting along well w ith his classmates w as teased on the playground and was frequently late to school In addition he appeared to be hungry was quite disheveled when he got to schixd The schixd team had been busy at the local level tutors had been worktngwithB J on his schixdwork he was given a complete physical exam through the health department and the family services worker had visited the home with a healih nurse While many problems could be re solved at the schixd level with the interagency team the physical examination had revealed an abnormality with B J 's heart which required follow up but the family had no car to get to medical appointments In addition through the home visit it was learned that this single parent mother had recently lost her job the water had been cut off because of unpaid bills and she was m need of immediate dental care due to severely abscessed teeth The meeting held in May resulted in assistance in getting water reconnected which would allow the family to bathe and have clean clothes and an appointment for B J to have further medical evaluation The team also arran ged for transportation for B J and his mother to Salt Lake City an appointment for his mother with the lixal demist and a subsequent appointment for her w ith Job Service Tins scene is repc ated throughout the State of Utah in each of the nine schixd districts who are participating in the Early Intervention for School Success Program This program is one example of Utah's public agencies collaborating to meet the increasing number of children with complex and diverse needs This program targets children and families in kindergarten through llie third grade who mav not be succeeding in school for a number of reasons some school specilic sot e family or comsome individually munity related unique some economically related An 35 40 estimated percent of Utah’s schixd population arc "at risk" and require specialized intervention at sometime dunng their schixd years The complexity of these children's needs means that no one agency can help them Only by both publie and private agencies working together can Utah's children achieve educational success Plans are in progress to significantly expand the number of districts schixds and grade
