By Mark L Godfrey PhD Just as there is no one profile of a batterer there is no typical battered woman To make that critical step of leaving an abusive situation the woman must change her behavior and many cannot do that until they have suffered intense or prolonged abuse Why would anyone put up with abuse? As with violent men women who take abuse as adults frequently grew up in abusive families Ironically seeing her mother battered makes a woman more likely to put up with later abuse rather than deciding not to repeat her mother's problems Witnessing violent activity teaches that violence is a “normal” part of family life Parents actually teach their children to accept violent situations And if the woman was herself beaten as a child she is more likely to many a violent spouse and to accept abuse by that spouse She’s used to being beaten and the person doing it doesn’t really matter Researcher Elizabeth Truninger lists several oilier reasons some women stay with husbands who beat them: Whatever their poor abused women childhood experiences are often those who grow up with a poor will This lack of make her vulnerable to an abusive husband Over time she will come to believe that she deserves beatings because she is worthless and incompetent 2 belief their husbands will reform This is closely related to a woman's love for her spouse even if he does batter her Especially in the honeymoon phase the wife truly believes the husband is capable of changing even though he steadfastly refuses to accept that change is necessary 3 inability to deal appropriately with anger Battered women frequently find it difficult to handle anger taking out their aggression on their children or “getting back” at their husband in subtle ways If their anger is turned inward depression often results and women may even become incapable of any action 4 lack of selfnurturance The battered woman tends to put everyone else’s needs before her own If there are children she's apt to leave her husband only if he starts abusing the children She may feel that she deserves beating but the children do not 5 traditional values Women who believe in the traditional family and their role in it are often afraid of social disapproval if they report battering or file for divorce Also brought up to be dependent on their husbands many women feel they cannot survive on their own 6 economic realities A woman who has been totally supported by her husband will find life outside marriage difficult at best Food stamps and welfare are often her only options She probably lacks job sk ills and could not afford child care even if she could get a job since women's joba almost always pay less 7 no place to go Women who have lived for a time in a battering situation often have been separated from their support systems Families and friends even if they believe she needs help may not be able to provide room and board Besides that's just where the husband will look for her Shelters are an option but are not a long term answer With these difficulties plus those a woman will find with legal systems staying with an abuser is often the “easy" way of coping with the problems If you or someone you know is trying to cope with an abusive situation call New Horizons for help You can call doesn’t have Johnson said He said WCDI is “openly advocating complete control and domination of milk" in Utah to the detriment of independent outlets "They would like very much for us independents to be either squeezed out" he said "or more advantageous just step out of the picture voluntarily leaving them not only complete access to the production of the milk but also complete domination of manufacturing and sales" One government official who preferred to remain anonymous agreed "It’s my feeling at this point that WDG’s track record pretty well speaks for itself" the official said An arrangement by local farmers with Magic Valley would prevent that from happening any time soon Johnson said at least for his business "It's my only salvation” with Many farmers disgruntled WDG agree that competition is needed “We need it least two places to market milk" Johnson said Anderson said WDCI is aware that Magic Valley is “trying to encourage people to make a switch from one organization to another I hope if people are looking they take a real close look at it" Extension Agent Larry Campbell said the Extension Service may host a in early May for intertour of the ested local farmers Details have not been worked out It would take several months before any interested farmer with an existing contract could switch “Magic Valley has not put a time frame on it" Johnson said"but we would like to have it within a year” contracts are normally for one year They usually contain stiff penalties for early cancellation Magic Valley has 38 members who produce about 6000000 pounds of milk a day survival is not tied to the local market Johnson said but his is "They now have plenty of places to take their milk at less cost to them" he said "Their objective now is saying ‘Johnson helped us when we needed his market so we’re willing to stand by this thing until he gets it put together’” Still Johnson said he is concerned that if not enough local dairymen can be convinced to sign on Magic Valley could pull out of the area “If a man empties his purse Into his head no man can taka it away from him An Investment In knowledge always pays the best Interest " note: a couple of weeks ago MM! did a column about Breadly Democrat candidate for Crumbsdale something pretty Important or other who came to town to sell some snake olL In the Interests of balanced reporting this week be is rude to the (Editor's opposition) Governor Naim Bumgarten came to dinner last week Or was it the week before? I can’t remember it Anyway we had a nice dinner and was a nice day and everybody was nice and he made a nice speech about how nice everything was It was nice Next time you're so lucky take a good look at His Nibs Doesn’t he took like Mikhail Gorbachev without the red skid mark over his right eye? They both look like the Pillsbury Doughboy Neither makes me think of Darth Vader The gov is certainly no Mario It’s not because he isn't a Cuomo Democrat like Cuomo and it’s not because he lacks the charisma Cuomo has or the national stature and it isn't because he isn't governor of New York It’s because he isn’t Mario Cuomo Most people aren't but let it pass What’s important is that the governor came to dinner He could have gone to Wyoming for horse race or Nevada for casino gambling or Idaho for the lottery or Arizona for liquor by the drink but he chose to come to our humble village instead Isn’t that nice? It was held at the county fairgrounds exhibit building It’s a big building Not like the Houston Astrodome but big enough to hold a sitdown dinner for 20 at one end and a little league soccer game at the other with room leftover for a rummage sale in the middle At the same time At first I thought I was in the wrong place The tong tables were decorated with pink yellow lavender and white balloons and ribbons I looked in vain for the “Happy 8th Birthday LaSue DeTami!!” sign on the walL Then I remembered it was close to Easter and Don Johnson pastels were in vogue The building is new With it comes a new tradition Everybody has to stand in the doorway chatting with everybody else until somebody tells you to sit down and eat Groups don't do this when they eat in restaurants Why do they do this when they eat in bams?
