collapse Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to cool itself resulung in dangerously high body temperatures The symptoms for heat stroke which is far more serious than heat exhaustion are dizziness headache thirst nausea and muscle cramps The two most dangerous symptoms of heat stroke however are no sweating and a dangerously high body temperature What is an important part of any exercise program especially in warm weather You should drink several cups of water before exercising and drink small quantities every minutes during prolonged or vigorous exercise Dnnk plenty of water after you exercise When the mercury dips below 40 degrees or soars above 80degrees staying inside to avoid the weather and exercise is tempting But exercise is a activity when you're trying to slay m shape The American Heart Association advises all Americans to maintain their exercise programs throughout the year but to be cautious of extreme weather conditions as well “We're all inclined to think that the spring and the fall are the best times to exercise" says Kent W Jones M D president of the American Heart Association Utah Affiliate “But a little cold weather or a little hot weather shouldn't keep us from the outside activities we enjoy such as biking or jogging” What is important according to Jones is caution in the extreme heat or cold Jones offered these precautions: When exercising in cold weather Wear warm layers of clothing from your head to your iocs Don't forget to wear a hat or scarf since most heat is lost through the top of your head And don't forget the gloves Give your body a little time to acclimate to the cold before you start stretch Always exercising your muscles to limber them up and avoid cramping Consider alternate indoor activities such as an exercise or sports class at a local university or fitness club or brisk walking at the local mall When exercising in warm weather Give yourself lime to acclimate to the demands ofexercising in increased i ' temperature Start exercising at an easier pace and build up your routine slowly over a week or two In all temperatures you should exercise at a considerable pace that allows you to keep up a conversation Try exercising in the early morning or early evening when the temperatures are cooler Clothing for summer exercise should be light and Avoid rubberized or plastic suits sweatshirts and sweatpants Heavy will cause clothing dangerously high body temperatures an increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke Be aware of the two most common dangers of exercising in the
