McComick Topic of Meeting March 8th The settlement of between Delta and Fillmore will be the subject of the meeting of the Great Basin Historical Society on Thursday March 8thMaterial for the evening will include information compiled by the Carrie N Clark and later added to by LaVell Johnson Slides will be shown of the area when it was a little community complete with church and school There are pictures of the settlers of the area in many of the slides Anyone who has lived there long ago or whose family lived pioneered there is urged to attend and share their experiences The meeting will be held in the Delta City Building at 7:00 pm Refreshments will be served and everyone is welcome Ni The Hincldcy Lions Club has donated $600 to the Utah Lions Foundation Eye Bank and Eye Research Laboratory The money will go toward purchase of equipment for the B ank and Lab now under construction The club made a $600 donation to the Utah Lions Foundation last spring through a Journey for Sight program This year’s donation is from proceeds of the Demolition Derby which is held each year on July 24th “None of these funds arc used for wages advertising rent and so on" club member Clark Hardy said “All monies go into the project and use for the project" H ardy sits on the Utah Lions Foundation Board of Trustees He is also the Lions Club Journey for S ighl Chairm an The Journey for Sight program also raised $200 that was sent to Lions International Foundation for the purpose of diabetes research Proceeds from the Demolition Derby also goes for purchasing eyeglasses for needy school children Money also goes to the local Extended Care Facility and other worthwhile local projects “We certainly appreciate the support we have received from the local communities" Hardy said “Without you giving us this support we could do nothing We feel like we have made life better for others” Pesticide Applicator Training Growers who need to obtain or renew pesticide application Hunter Libraries get county money The County Library Board fulfilling a commitment made last year has given the Delta and Fillmore city libraries $1000 each to help complete some literacy classes They will be used for that in Fillmore too Hunter said “We have three classes going now" she said There are two computers in the Delta projects The checks were presented at the board meeting Friday Feb 16 at South Elementary School in Della They were presented to Fillmore librarian Gwen Hunter and Delta librarian Deb Greathouse In Fillmore the money will help cut down on administrative book work “We’re applying this money toward purchase of a computer" Hunter said “We're going to do checkout on it plus we’re going to get our catalog on it library Both libraries are computerizing their catalog systems The Library B oard is try ing to get a computerized list of books in all county libraries and in the bookmobiles so anyone wanting a specific book in the county can find it In addition books will soon be checked out by a bar code s imil ar to that used at grocery store checkout counters “It alleviates a lot of extra book work” board member Kevin Chapman said School libraries are working wins a new Sue Robson of Delta was the winner of a new color television with remote control in a drawing conducted recently by Insight Cablevision of Delta Robson was presented her prize Tuesday Feb 3 at the Insight office in Delta by John Keel systems manager for the company James Stewart vice president for operations for the company from New York was also present for the award Robson won by filling out a survey form sent out by the company at the first of the year “We wanted to find out why people subscribe to cable television” TV Keel said “what programming they watch most and if we decided to add more channels what channels they'd like to see come in" Those who responded to the survey were eligible to win the TV plus one year free service and a choice of pay channels Second through fifth prizes were free service for a shorter period of time on basic service and some pay channels About 120 survey forms were returned from about 620 sent out Keel said results haven't been tabulated yet He said the company does intend to expand Revolving loan fund available Glen Swalberg Scouts committee for 1990 named The Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America met recently to name several business and community leaders to serve on its executive committee for the coming year Among those named to serve was Glen Swalberg Delta native and businessman who will be Council President Others on the committee are from Wasatch Front communities Swalberg gave the new council a charge to help Boy Scouts combat what he called the five “unacceptables" in American society: hunger illiteracy unemployment child abuse and drug abuse “Our duty is to become acquainted with and seek to eliminate these threats to out society" he said “What could be more current and what could be more helpful to a community than having thousands of boys and hundreds of leaders concerned with these and working to curb if not end them all together?"
