Show M'lard County Chronic'e Watson named district Teacher of the Year (Editor’s note trie following article is repnnted from “Millard School Distncl County Report Card” with permission ) The recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award in Millard County School District is Kerry Watson Science teacher at Millard High School Mr Watson is an mdmdual who truly loves his work his students and one who is making excellent contributions to the teaching of mathemetics in Utah A teacher for the past 17 years Millard High School Mr Watson has taught Intermediate Algebra a College Algebra Geometry During those 17 yeas yeas he has developed a math program of excellence for a school of this si e ( 344 students At the beginning of his tenure Algebra II was the highest math available at this school Seeing the need for higher math classes and by working with students Mr Watson developed the advanced math classes thatac now available Inaddmon he made it possible through a cooperative effort with Snow College for students Miliad High School to ean up to 10 hours of college math credit concurrently in College Algebra and Calculus As for his teaching abilities the 1989-9Teacher of the Yea ap- a proaches tience dent perfection Through pahumor and skill he s even the most reluctant stuHaving the ability to make difficult math concepts seem easy he helps students reach their highest Mr Watson never gives potenual With incredible up on a student he reviews concepts and patience si ills until each student has underTo stood the necessary principles accomplish the task he spends countless hours before and after school and sometimes gives up his evenings and Saturdays An addiuonal note worthy quality Mr is his love for young people Watson truly enjoys interacting with He has been in a coaching them situation for most of his tenure at Millard High School and is always willing to carry responsibilities to Taking every opportunity improve his teaching skills he conhis techstantly strives to by attending workshops niques classes and conventions This Spring as an example he spent a week in Orlando Florida attending the National Math Convention Mr Watson and his wife Tafia have four girls and three boys fie is a graduate of Brigham Young University and is active in community and church He has also found time to be active in scouting for the past nine years The Millard School District recognizes Mr Kerry Watson for his outstanding service to the students of Millard High School He is a great asset to the Millard School District Debators return from Dixie Workshop Four novice debaters and coach recently relumed on attending a two week summer workshop hosted by Dixie College J T Turner Brandcn Bcvan and Kodi Cam pea u returned home with trophies earned at the end of workshop tournament J T earned a 2nd place novice team debate trophy as he paired up with a fellow novice from Western High School out of Las Vegas won 2nd place in Novice debate behind a 2nd year competitor from Brighton High Kodi debated with in Salt Lake Shawna Reynolds in a team debate and earned the third place superior speaker award in that event The workshop hosted 120 debaters from Utah Nevada Arizona and California the two week during in the heat July in St experience Terry Hansen July 21 from George Mr Hansen indicated he was well pleased with the showing of these There are 24 registered sophomores in this year’s program and this coach is excited for the new year to begin This class has not been offered for the past two years There are only four who return with any experience but Hansen is optomisuc about their chances this year He looks to the next couple of years being “building” years but expects to bring home a number of winning trophies this year The high school Forensics (competitive!
