Members family and friends of the Delta High School acappella choir completed a lengthy fund drive Thursday May 25 by sending a check to the travel agency making arrangements for their trip to France this summer The check was for $13534 Around $109000 has been sent to Journey Associates of Mesa Arizona Cost is $2067 per ticket students and chaperones are going The choir has been invited by the Mission Du Bicenteniare and the City of Paris through Journey Associates to sing Sunday July 2 in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower in celebration of the bicentennial of the French Revolution The trip will also feature several performances in England Choir director David Wankier said the choir will perform in Stratford England "They want us to be on the parade float for one of the radio networks in London” he said “They us to ride and have the want chaperones follow along with the We’re also enrolled in another 'festival in London1 where we’ll do a concert” V Hope of America Awards were presented to the twelve sixth grade students shown in the accompanying picture The students were praised by Kiwanis president Ward Killpack who made the awards by accompanied other officers: Thorpe Waddingham Doyle Topham and Mel Scow Millard ' Kiwanis The Club makes this annual award to Mr members of the sixth grade Killpack noted that the purpose is to “that process leadership: promote whereby an individual directs guides influences or controls the thoughts feelings or behavior of other human beings towards desirable ends” Some of the special qualities which this years student nominees for the award showed included: ability to make valid decisions ability to generate new ideas willingness to hear suggesand to accept criticism objectivetions ly seeing responsibilities and having a good sense of values Wankier said the choir will rehearse several times a week before leaving The adults were required to pay their own way but parents of choir members formed an ad hoc group in to help students raise money Since then the group has met every Monday night in the choir room at DHS to consider projects Dozens of have been held They included a garage sale a carwash several raffles an auction a sale of bake sales drive iron scrap to the Chronicle Prosubscriptions gress the sale of balloons for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day several dances shows and concerts a tour of Salt Lake City with an appearance at a Golden Eagles hockey game and at the State Capitol the sale of firewood a pheasant unit sale and several other projects businesses inSeveral foundations were apdustries and philanthropists proached for donations Drop boxes on checkout counters of area businesses produced a lot of money for the effort The group leaves Salt Lake City for Europe June 30 Many helped choir funding In addition to revenue earned through various sponsored by the choir for their trip to France this summer many individuals and groups made significant donations to the cause Here is a During that year they competed in a National Cheerleading Competition in Caliirnia Their squad of twelve girls took a routine and placed third in the nation Jenny Ekins not only went to California last year but was asked to Varcompete the year before with the sity squad as a junior They competed in Florida for Nationals and took fourth in the nation Jenny has been taking gymnastics for ten years and has competed in that area all her life Next year she will attend Southern Utah where she will be a State College member of the gymnastics team Kristi Gardner has been a member of the "Las Chalitas” Drill Team as well as cheerleader While she was in Drill Team they placed first in their region That year she was chosen outstanding drill team member as a junior She has taken dancing for seven years and has many of her own choreographed dances Both Jenny and Kristi have had experience in teaching cheerleading skills this past year to young girls in their area They enjoy it and look forward to teaching again Honors Institute Michelle Dent daughter of erden and Christine Dent of Oak City has won a scholarship to the Summer Honors Institute at Ricks College in Rexburg Idaho this summer The Institute is designed for talented academically high school Twenty such students are juniors selected to attend from throughout the United States and Canada The Institute will be held June applicants because of talent and need she will be a volunteer to the faculty Scholarship recipients will receive a manuscript consultation with a visiting author editor or publisher chosen by each writer Marti has been published in the Deseret News the Salt Lake Tribune the Ensign Magazine and St George Magazine She is currently working on several health and psychology nonfiction articles and a
