Bird Center each Wednesday afternoon Every flower a new art work by Ken Rand What makes the floral business so tractive? “Maybe it’s the love of the work” Marilyn Blanch says “That’s why I started it” Marilyn Blanch of Kousins Floral 76 W Main in Delta says her family has been in this sort of business “forever” It began with Marilyn’s mother and it’s been picked up by her children When traveling Marilyn studies her favorite occupation “Every place we go” she says “I’d stop at every floral shop and see I’d go in and talk to the and the different see people things they were doing I see their arrangements and study the new trends shop a lot in California When I go I bring back a whole van full of different things so it’s not always the same things here “Shopping is my hobby” Marilyn says "We go to the import stores in Provo and Salt Lake City We try to do as much shopping as we can in Utah I believe in that But wherever we happen to go we get into it “My daughter went to floral design school and she started doing orders on the side when she was just young" Marilyn says Marilyn was referring to the time when the family lived in Yuba City California where the high school daughter Toni attended was so large it had a class in floral design Marilyn is a Delta native She lived in the San Francisco Bay area for about 20 years returning to Delta about 15 years ago “We showed horses at the Cow Palace in San Francisco” Marilyn says When she returned to Delta she located at 243 W Main where she worked for six years She was out of the business for two years and opened again this summer The new location is a redesigned old house “I like old houses” Marilyn says It used to house a beauty shop but had not been in use for about 16 years before Marilyn got it Cindy Crafts who now works with Marilyn owned the floral shop at the old location for a time The shop reflects a sense of beauty color and balance shared by Marilyn and those who work with her including Crafts daughter Toni Harris and sister Karen Fowles Several girls who have worked there while in high school have continued their work elsewhere One works at a floral shop in New York another at a shop in Provo A display around a Christmas tree dominates one corner of the interior of the building Silver apples hang from a frosted tree A holly wreath circles one window Old furniture is used to tastefully display some of the shop’s varied merchandise Baskets dried floral arrangements and silks hang from the walls of the shop Of course there are fresh flowers available Marilyn lists flower prices on a chalk board to reflect their rapid often seasonal changes The shop also has a large selection of greeting balloons There is about the place a general feel of the artists commitment to cellence “We just love color” Marilyn says “All my girls who work here do it a bit differently They have their own styles” In fact Marilyn says after a while a person with a trained eye can tell who did a given floral arrangement Like any kind of artistic expression the work is intensely personal No two floral arangements are ever the same Marilyn says Each is a work of art a thing of beauty something individually designed and created by hand to reflect an individual mood or feeling message “People will call on the phone and say ‘I don’t know exactly what want but this is how I feel about and want something that will say that’ That’s what we do” Busiest time of the year for the florist business is Mother’s Day Marilyn says Memorial Day is second busiest followed by Valentine’s Day Funerals and weddings are also important occasions Marilyn says she has been working closely with Nickle Mortuary in Delta for a number of years “I consider my shop like a public service” Marilyn says "I just want to do a good job here for the people and have fun doing it” Marilyn says enjoying her work takes time “My family feels the same” she says “It takes longer for some of them but it has to be to do an arrangement done so it’s right If it’s a bud vase it has to be done like a bud vase “We enjoy our work” Marilyn says “We have fun We love the people” It shows Huwmrsef The When the accappella choir
