Show I LSPS Millard County 2 - Pge Thurs TO (fijpmmenta Well I am running true to form - it is just two and a half weeks to Christmas and I have the disposition of a barracuda and have just made a Christmas list was going to try to be better this year but the cold weather took all the starch out of my resolve and the fog was just the icing on the cake But there is a glimmer of light (no read pun intended) on the horizion an article about the U Mood Disorder Center looking for subjects to try new and medication on called therapy them right up and they sent the forms to fill out to see if qualify am interested in their seasonal study that they are going to treat with have heard about this in years lights - - cejPrr"i f irf‘Jr’m'fii''i rrT ifIMiathjairLii''ir"''‘iii"'Mi''' ij)infT“ 1988 8 Dec ji JSnc past and have been very interested as my mood deteriorates in the season when the sun shines least They sent me a form to fill out and also a copy of their form for depression and ask me to spread the word If anyone is interested give me a call When I called they gave me a brief rundown about the light therapy and said the subject was to be in the light from 6:30 to 8:30 am for two weeks ask if anyone got out of bed at such an hour? The sacrifices one makes for sanity But the thoughts of going through one winter pleasantly instead of mean makes me anxious to try most wonder if could get a tan anything also? THE AA MEETING EDITOR SCHEDULE Commission has moral obligation As a former member of the Board Trustees of the West Millard Hospital Service District there are several things I feel should be brought s to the attention of the in this District The Delta Community Medical Center (Hospital) is NOT owned by Millard County It belongs to IHC and no tax dollars are supposed to be converted for it’s maintenance 2 All monies generated from property taxes in the West Millard Hospital Service District are supposed to be ed to maintain the West Millard Care Center (old hospital) The Care Center is managed by IHC under the terms of a Lease Agreement signed many years ago and subsequently renewed at the time the new IHC hospital was completed and the old hospital was converted to be used wholly as a Care Center Sometime in July or August of this year the Millard County Commisfor reasons not totally sioners understood by me determined that the Board of Trustees of the West Millard District should be Service Hospital removed from such Board and that the Millard County Commissioners should then comprise the governing Board of the District It is my understanding that the County Attorney is to give the Commissioners an opinion as to the legality of this action I have no argument with being dismissed from my of position on the governing board But am concerned about some of the tions the Commissioners are apparently am concernconsidering Specifically ed that they are talking of dissolving both the West Millard Hospital Service District and the East Millard Hospital District and making the entire county into one Hospital Service District so as to make it possible to share the tax in West Millard dollars generated County from the Intermountain Power Project with East Millard I think the taxpayers deserve a chance to agree or disagree with such a decision on the part of the County Commission In January we will have two new Commissioners sworn in One of these new Commissioners has openly criticizfor not ed the present Commissioners enough money in East spending Millard charging that too much attention is spent on West Millard projects firmly believe that West Millard taxpayers have worked hard in the past just to get our old hospital and I also believe that it is now serving a very real need as a Care Center I do not profess to know what is legal with regards to the actions taken by the County the in dismissing Commissioners Trustees on the governing board but do feel they have a moral obligation to the taxpayers regarding the West Millard Hospital Service District Gloria W Walker Why are kids getting fatter? Part By Dennis Hinkamp Information Writer Utah State University There is an illusion going around that we as a nation are getting in better shape There is a highly visible vocal minority that is lifting weights going to aerobics classes competing in triathlons and wearing tights However only one in five adults actually participates in a fitness activity at least twice a week If you’re counting on the next generation to improve things forget it Kids are fatter and in poorer shape now than they were 20 years ago According to the American Academy of Pediatrics: to 50 percent of American children are not getting enough exercise to develop healthy heart and lungs -- Forty percent of - to olds show at least one risk factor of heart disease: elevated blood pressure high cholesterol or physical inactivity -- Between 1963 and 1980 obesity creased 54 percent in children ages 6 to and 39 percent in adolescents ages 12 to 17 Where does the problem start and what can you do about it? Since there seems to be a new diet book on the best seller list every week it is obvious that we adults aren’t coming to grips with the problem very well ourselves What we can do is try to make things easier for children by starting them off This and the following two right weeks’ columns will look at the problem of childhood obesity from the perspectives of a dietitian a physical education teacher and an early childhood educator Noreen Schvaneveldt dietitian in the Utah State University College of Family Life says parents are stuck between the legendary rock and hard place You of course don’t want your kids to become obese On the other hand parents of girls are terrified of promoting eating disorders such as anorex Consumer jaasiEBiia rl rS1 American Heart Association for our life we're fighting Delta Area li 1F Filimore Area Ktrri Mhrx B Low 1 lav Rogers Low Precp Precp 15 12 18 11 14 12 19 19 19 14 14 13 Dec 15 17 37 Thu Precipitation for November was 191 average is 131 Of the precipitation 135 inches was snow 18 the average is 9 inches Community Calendar Motor Vehicle Schedule: Fillmore £ Counts Millard Delta weekdays Assessor’s offices Sundays 7:30 pm Delta High “Messiah” practice School Choral Room 10:3(1 am Mondays Reflections Turning Point Office Voc Center Delta 8 Dec DHS Acappella will sing at am 10 f ' Millard County The Chronicle Progress USPS Dtfta mry 1 Publisher Sutan Editor Dutton 6 Editorial ken Rand at Reporter Jube i Legal Billing Sales ttard Goerti Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn MaHet Deb Greathouse Accounts Receivable Circulation Jube tt ard Goerti Rita Robinson Circulation Circulation Commercial Sheliie Subscriptions Comp Production County Printing Box 249 O Advertwnf Cum im PUtl Deha m fteauer Ji ff 6M COMPAQ ?s!7v- ci I Dec $4Q4 woio — nbSOUA’un 8' tllSOA One day Kevin’s father came home with a box from a toy store but n didn’t contain toys In that box were brightly colored ll 26 letters of plastic the alphabet Attached to each letter was a magnet Kevin's dad stuck the letters on the metal door of the family's refrigerator Then he sat on the floor with Kevin and began pulling letters off the door and naming each letter as he removed it The father held each letter so Kevin could plainly see it and pronounced each letter distinctly After he thought Kevin had seen and heard enough he would say: “Kevin give me a ‘k’” Soon Kevin was giving his Dad the letters he requested Then Kevin's a teacher showed the two mother Force continued aircraft o to Handles d OMices Hea1'- months changes Utah by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President “I don’t know what the are going to be to us” he said “Mostly it seems r’s just going to be In Advance 00 per 6 50 cents Success in School Air Dutson Single Copy Send Address POSTMASTER r 16 59 and distribution Commodities under p m or until commodities cone M F Br J enier 17 Dei DHS “Sub for Santa" dance 9 to school commons hp sync midnight contest 10 30 p m Diedre Troner and James Robison wedding open house Fillmore 1st 4:h W ard "9pm In County $20 00 per year In County $13 00 per 6 months of County $2500 per year Out Out of You and Your Child: 9am Dec Large Advertising Sales Riley Mood Rita Robinson Dec 9 Commodities distribution 60 and M E Bird Center older p m Dec 10 Sandra Marie Allison and John V Labrum weddnng Open House p m Meadow Ward Cultural Hall ”M illow" Plaza Twin Theater 2 p m Proceeds to the urn hoir Dec 11 Elder Gary G Bennett mission farewell Delta 3rd Ward hapel Dennis Dutson Elder mission farewell 220 p m Delta 2nd Ward Dec 13 DHS Band Christmas Concert 7 pm Dec 14 DHS Acappella to sing at Golden I agles Hockev Game Salt Palace Blood Prescure Clinic ai Supio 15 p m Senior Citizen B1 D Dec 15 Food Handlers Fillmore Class Public Heal'h Offices 2 30 p m (S5 fee) Delta Public lass 2 3( (S5) biff'd Co- ‘censt Mair DeUa Jan 12 Dead’ ne fcr appltca'io-- s t” Room J H A quil' Mi hard r '''via' 22 sD Coun- West olarship although somewhere along that range I'm sure they have to pu' up some buildirgs and things” 23 D’aw i for DM S PI Jan 6 Bet Tag Deadline fee tv J' ices’ is! Bottom of the Ninth Dear Bottom First of all it’s unfortunate that you were taught that drinking is evil Granted it is not good for you and it causes a great number of problems but to call it evil only increases the attraction for many In fact for kids who become addicts most come from two kinds of homes: One where addiction is the family problem The other is where alcohol is viewed as being evil I From a clinical point of view would be out of line to evaluate the physical problem that may or may not drinkhave developed because of your ing suggest that you contact your physician and share your concerns with him or her can however share some information with you on fetal alcohol syndrome Current research indicates that heavy use of alcohol by women during pregnancy may result in a pattern of abnormalities in their babies termed the fetal alcohol syndrome It consists of specific congenital and behavioral abnormalities such as an increase in stillbirths growth abnormalities and Both the risk spontaneous abortions and the extent of the abnormalities appear to be increasing with intake during the higher alcohol pregnancy period In human studies alcohol is a definite factor when the full pattern of the fetal alcohol syndrome is present In cases where all the characteristics are not present the correlation between alcohol and the adverse effects is complicated by such factors as nutrition smoking caffeine and other drug consumption Given the total evidence available at this time pregnant women should be particularly conscious of the dangers of their And while safe levels of drinking drinking are unknown total abstinence appears to be the best rule Therefore women and those likely to pregnant become pregnant should discuss their habits and the potential drinking dangers with their physicians Wants assistance We are gaihering information for a history of the town of Clear Lake We would like to hear from people who had experiences or lived there or whose parents or grandparents lived or owned land there We also welcome information about the following whose names were found: CW Aldrach J D Aldrach Carl R Gordon RA Stratton Jame1- A Robinson Peter Shields Thank you for your help Della Bennett General Delivery Meadow UT 84644 QUESTION: If it’s true that more employees are using drugs on the job I as an should what signposts employer look for to help me identify the employee with this problem ANSWER: The National Institute of figures in Drug Abuse released September that 10 to 23 percent of all workers in this country are using drugs on the job As many as 65 percent of the young people now coming into the American work force have used illegal drugs What this means to employers absenteeism costs is lost productivity of turnover increased use of health benefits accidents and losses stemmObviousing from impaired judgment ly the costs are high for any company The typical employee drug abuser has the following characteristics you should be aware of: late three times more often than employees who do not use drugs requests for early dismissal or time off more than twice as often as coworkers twice as many absences of eight days or more times the normal level of sick three benefits five times more likely to file a workmen’s compensation claim involved in accidents 35 times coworkers more often than If you see these signposts the next step is to learn about intervention alternatives Most EAPs or treatment programs such as the Help Unit are more than willing to work with you in this area QUESTION: Lately I’ve been hearing a lot about professional football players who are caught using drugs and or perget suspended temporarily manently from playing Isn't this action a little severe for the player who smokes a little grass or snorts a little cocaine at parties? ANSWER: You’re right about hearing or reading about drug abuse in professional football only recently since the NFL had no policy for dealing with team players until 1986 Since then from to each preseason every player in the NFL’s 28 camps about 2500 athletes are tested for drugs The first time a player tests positive the results are forwarded to Dr Forrest Tennant the NFL’s drug consultant in California He contacts the team’s physician and these two doctors either outpatient prescribe treatment or inpatient up to 30 days If a players tests positive a second time he is placed on the team’s “nonfootball illness” list which prohibits him from playing for 30 days Doctors again prescribe treatment and the team decides whether to pay the player during his absence or to dock him The third positive test and the player is permanently banned from the NFL But he may apply for reinstatement after a year As you can see suspension is not caused by a player infrequently indulging in a little “pot” or “coke” but a continued use of drugs indicative of that player’s addiction to drugs Grass and cocaine are dangerous highly addictive drugs Given the fact that many people cluding athletes have died from “snorting a little cocaine” suspension doesn’t seem loo severe Editor’s Director not: John of Dependency Waterbury Dayspring Chemical Services tor is and questions requests 'or information maybe sent to him a IHC 36 South State Street 2 1st door Salt Lake City Utah 841 11 These tetter s form the basis tor the Dear John Letters or Budget Sherida Kennedy displays the Chronicle Progress coffee mug she won by finding errors in the paper We refuse to tell sou how many she found but the figure would impress Carl Sagan Find the most typos in this issue and win a cup continued situation to fill all of the things we had planned on spending money for with the protested money It just means a tighter budget" He said the commission will not raise taxes Hansen said IPP has drama'ically the tax changed picture in the county “We anticipated about $800000 in tax revenue in Millard County as late as 1987 he said “In future years our anticipated tax revenues are up around $5 million A big part of that comes from IPP” The er 'ire budget a detailed breakdown for each ccunty department covers about 150 pages of computer paper The annual budget hearing was scheduled for II a m fuesday Dec 6 in Fillmore The hearing was open o the public Hansen said he expects the commissioners will approve the final oudget Tuesday Dec 13 Utah sode calls for the final budget to be approved no later than Dec 15 |
