Show r"r Page 2 - Millard County (Sontmente Here it is Monday night and we are finishing up the paper It seems to me to be full of interesting items and to think we did it in one less day Now I can just hope it is going to get to the subscribers as the computer with the mailing list buried in its mysterious workings is having a severe sick spell But one thing at a time get the paper pasted up and printed and then worry about whether or not the computer is going to spit out the labels I’m sure computers are wonderful but I haven’t gotten to the stage of thinking so as I don’t understand how they work And if can’t figure out how things work I am still very wary of just how wonderful they are It took me a long time to trust calculators would use one and then double check it with my own computations If fact was horrified when my first kid came home and told me he needed a calculator for his math class What happened to ciphering and slide rules? guess need a class on what really makes computers tick before I’ll really trust them So far I find they give me enough just a touch of confidence and then let me down laughing all the way There are other things in life like that but I’ll save that radical subject for arlother time have been enjoying the President this John F Kennedy reminiscing week just sorry haven’t been able to catch all the shows on TV It certainly was different times The show I watched Sunday included part of a Nixon - Kennedy debate I had forgotten what it was like when they were somewhat respectful of each other and discussed issues And even though the Bay of Pigs was an event started before Kennedy when it turned out to be a disaster he took A far cry from the Iran responsibility Contra affair Thurs L'SPS Nov 24 1988 - - ufi THnnKSGiuins EDITOR jjpf tid- AnothA interesting item I caught by accident on TV recently was the Carter production on waste It started with a description of how much energy it takes to make something from scratch it then went to the serious hazardous waste situation and then to recycling As I am a saver I am also a recycler but I learned from the show have a long ways to go to be a good recycler As I mentioned a year ago after my I was trip to Portland Oregon fascinated with the paper recycling plant And the show pointed out that ton of recycled paper is equivalent to 17 trees The show also stated that one of the major problems at present is plastic as it is believed that burning plastics is one of the major sources of dioxins in the air I took a survey on the plastics in my house Wow! And as I thought about it I can think of many products that there is no choice - they come in plastic A gallon of milk for example I think it is time to regard recycling as one of the most important issues facing us today And maybe if we took recycling seriously we wouldn’t have to deal with so many hazardous waste issues Information clarified would like to clarify the information indicating that the officials in the Delta 17 and Delta 18 election districts had not experienced an election before It is often necessary to replace judges of election therefore some of those serving were new to the election process Because of complexity of the ballot and the large voter turnout the counting process was long and confusing not (If the county has a masterplan committee in place have I missed something? The names of committee members? And if the county gets $82500000 revenue from IPP sales and use taxes can’t that amount be used in the county’s general fund and taxes lowered for everyone? conWonder if the commissioners sidered Plans this?) (Fairground Studied Chronicle Progress Nov 17 1988) (I’m surprised that the commission hasn’t informed Pearson Robyn that the counCounty Administrator there in ty fair does have Deseret where it all started long before either Robyn or I for that matter became residents of the county) (Gotta remember to thank Sue and Ken for two items on the Nov 17 1988 Chronicle Progress front page Those being the Notice of the S Gale Chapman Incineration cancellation and how we all voted in the Nov 8 General Election That is a tremendous amount of work- -I remember well from my own Chronicle days Wonder what that “S” in Gale's name stands for? Sylvester? Stephen? Sam? In any case I’ve got to do something nice for Sue and Ken Cake? Pie? I’m just darned happy that we’ve got such a lively weekly newspaper in the area) (If a “video tape that will be used to solicit carefully SELECTED industries to locate here (Video to Promote Millard County Chronicle Progress Nov 17 1988) is there a possibility that I or some other such person may be carefully SELECTED to locate outside the county because of nonconformism? My word I should hope not But is it such a far fetched idea? I love this county Maybe we’re not as unique as I sometimes think we are but I compare this county to a simmering cauldron just about ready to bubble over at the mention of hazardous waste of all things There is a continuous undertow that follows the whims of Millard’s citizens I think First this way Then that But that’s what so lovable about the county love it Love it) I compose all sorts of letters in my head to grandchildren All filled with words of wisdom-owhat a laugh But I don't keep this nose out of a book long enough to get the typing done I hope they all know how proud I am of them how much I love them (Adam and Eve certainly made sure that none of us were promised a rose garden) The precipitation on the 14th in the form of 8 inches of was snow Community Calendar Assessor s offices Sundays 7:30 pm Delta High "Messiah” practice School Choral Room Mondays 10:30 am Reflections Turning Point Office oc Center Delta Nos 21 162 West 100 Food Bank opens South Delta pm Nos 25 Millard County Offices will be closed “Bop til sou Drop" 9 pm - 12Nos 27 mission Sister Bonnie Shipley 1:10 farewell Oak City 2nd Ward pm Sister farewell Marilyn illmore I 1st inlmson mission :20 4th W ard pm Nos 28 lmmumza'ion Clinic Delta Public a m 4 Health Offiap m Barbara Eaigle will speak on depression pm Turning Point Office Voc Center Delta (Brown Bagging It) 2 Nos 30 Dec Santa's Secret Shop sponsored bv DNESPTA Dec Aappella Choir bazaar DHS Annex during girls basketball game Blood Pressure Clinic Holden first Thurs of esery month pm at the Fire Station Dec 2 Andrea Henrie and Darren AnderSutherland son wedding reception ? I think I daresay “NONE") (I guess I could be called a public library user among other things I just read two books that evoke all sorts of memories: The Dollmaker by Harriette Arnow Copyright 1954 and The Last Convertible by Anton Myrer Copyright 1978 are the titles The Dollmaker reminds me of my early years—growing up on a farm parents sorta working superstitious homemade candy and fun and clothes and some of the things that I knew just had to be true because they were passed on from mother to daughter for umpteen generations Such as? Such as if it’s raining and the sun is shining and you stick a straight pin in the ground and put your ear on the pinhead you hear the devil can ABSOLUTELY whipping his wife! I’ll just bet not many people know that the devil has a wife But people in the South know there are sorts of things don’t kid Another thing I yourself otherwise grew up just knowing is that when a woman is in labor a sharp knife should be placed under her bed to cut the pain into That’s important stuff) (The Last Convertible had little to do with me as I was lucky to have a boyfriend with a cattle truck that didn’t run half of the time and with real bald tires! Convertibles were for others in other places But the story brings to mind choice memories many I was a young lady that nonetheless couldn't wait to cast her first vote What a day I dressed in a green and white voile dress hosiery white gloves white purse white flowers in my hair And I strutted right down to the polls My legs were so tanned that I didn’t really need to wear hosiery I was so I thought And I was an sophisticated adult With a lot to do Letters to write to servicemen whose names have now escaped me Picnics to plan Packages to send to faroff places Big band music Thinking I was the cat’s meow Strutting! Strutting! Always strutting! Rebelling against going to church every Sunday and Mama telling me that it was doing very little good if I were going only to please her! Listening to her quote a Bible verse to suit any had it all together that Mama of mine Ironing starched cotton clothes Wearing them once Then doing them all over again Bathing in a No 3 washtub Scrubbing out the old Plowing with a mule more stubborn than I Gee that book Turned me every which way but loose I think) (And it all changed from innocence to horror on receiving word that a friend had been killed in some faroff place to “We’re heroes We won a WAR And the devil take the hindmost”) (Somehow my generation failed the country I think) Sarah Inez Moody Money management in a changing economy By Dennis Hinkamp Consumer Information Writer Utah State University Whether young families are better off financially now than when their parents started out is hard to say The economy and our expectations have all changed Last week’s column looked at some of the ways you can measure relative This prosperity between generations week Dr Jean Lown consumer educator in the Utah State of Family Life gives some specific guidelines for adjusting your money management to our changing economy 1) Reassess your use of credit: Although it has always been dangerous the “buy now pay later” philosophy almost made sense during You sometimes times inflationary repaid your debts with cheaper dollars than the ones you borrowed Lower rates of inflation high credit card interest rates and the Tax Reform Act of 1986 make credit use less attractive Credit cards are convenient and often necessary but they are also one of the most expensive methods of borrowing money 2) Become regular saver: You’ve heard this for years but it is even more important when the economy appears to be slowing down Automatic payroll deduction plans make it easier That rainy day WILL come and an emergenmonths living cy fund to cover panses should be standard equipment for a family savings fund 3) Be sure your insurance is adequate: Insure against financial losses that would be so large you could not cope with them and remain financially fit Health insurance is a must If you are a relatively young wage earner disability insurance is at least as important as life insurance 4) Take advantage of tax deferred tax law savings plans: Although changes have made Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) a litle more difficult to assess they are still advantages for most families Also inquire if your employer offers 401 (k) or 403(b) retirement savings plans These may be better than IRAs for moderate and upper income earners 5) Determine your risk tolerance for investing: There is no such thing as investment Even government insured savings accounts and US Savings Bonds carry a risk The risk is that the return you get from them might not keep up with inflation 6) Diversify your investments: The people worst hit during the "Black Monday” stock crash were those who had all their investment eggs in one basket 7) Stagger investment maturities: If you are buying certificates of deposit or bonds don’t lock all your money to one time period and one rate of terest Interest rates are unpredictable 8) Use dollar cost averaging: Everyone who invests in the stock market would like to buy low and sell high but few people can successfully predict the future To protect yourself against panic buying and selling invest a set amount of dollars per month You buy more shares when the price is down and fewer when the price is up Over time you end up paying less than the average price per share This works best with diversified mutual funds over the long run 9) Keep your family well informed: Pretend you’re a corporation and hold an annual meeting This is a good time to teah money management skills to children and inform your spouse of all financial matters Share financial tasks with your spouse Don’t however just divide them into long term and expenses unless you plan to trade tasks on a regular basis Can we afford waste dump? Can we afford to have a hazardous waste disposal facility here in Millard County? It’s a Scientific Law that Matter can neither be created not destroyed but only changes form I’d like to ask Rollins Environmental Services about what kind of form the hazardous waste after having being products “incinerated” First they were proposing to build at now they are considering Lynndyl another alternative in Millard County Black Rock For years the wind has blown from direction Isn’t it the interesting to note that Black Rock lies of the East directly Millard communities This last summer we witnessed one of the largest hazardous waste spills in Utah’s history I’d like you to take a minute and think for yourself how that may have ended up should it have happened at the Fillmore Exit of Drivers are people too and sometimes make mistakes residents My wife and I are of Millard County I’m 25 years old and I am currently seeking stable I But quite frankly employment wouldn’t want a job at a hazardous waste facility I would challenge the Commissioners to seek “Cleaner and Safer Industries” Michael A Edison Does anybody know what time it is? Let me be the first to say that I am not opposed to progress But in this case progress has gone too far! When saw the clock being lowered from the First Security Building my first thought was - I can’t believe it! How in the world am I going to know if I am late or early to work if I have time to make it to the store before the doors close if I will be on time for my varied appointments or have to walk in late and if I will have time to finish my candy bar and get the smell off my breath before going home? How are my little darlings going to tell what time it is so they can get home at the appointed hour? I tell you this has put my system in a frenzy! Now I will be the 2nd to admit that the clock was seldom the cor rect time but after a few times you could pretty well judge and come rather close It’s pretty hard for me to be driving down Main Street now and have one eye on the Rancher billboard one eye on the lane I’m trying to stay in and one eye on the street light! And have you noticed how it is impossible to get a good sight of the Rancher billboard in the rear view mirror? It’s just my luck to hit the flashing sign when it says I’m a “steak and lobster” late for work Well let me say that it was a sad day life when the sign in my met its demise I’m sure that my heart will give a little flutter each time I pass the bank and see the big empty spot Deb Greathouse You and Your Child: Success in School by JIM CAMPBELL Utah Education Association President Most parents know that too much stress on a child can be harmful but too little stress can also hurt school achievement Drs William and Susan Stainback discuss that point in their new paperback entitled “How to Help Your Child Succeed in School” They state that if parents constantly protect their child from all stress that child will never reap the benefits of healthy levels of stress or learn how to deal safely with too much stress “A reasonable amount of stress will actually help your child succeed in school” they assert explaining that this will motivate the youngster to achieve and be more creative and productive” There’s a lot to what they say The student who is shielded from work may not develop a will to work On the Air Force continued the Air Force was giving out little formation on which such input could be based “The information they’re presenting is so sketchy that it’s hard to determine what it is that they're actually going to do” he said “It’s pretty general I was not satisfied with the dearth of information that was presented” Downwinders has not taken a “hard and fast position yet” Erickson said "We are still trying to figure out what they are doing But we do have some very serious concerns about it at this point and I’m disappointed with the response so far not only from the Air Force but from our political leadership in this state” Erickson said he was told access to the land will be subject to only limited restrictions “but in other areas where they’ve initiated major battlefields like it in the Dixie Valley in Nevada drives basically everybody out You can’t live in a war zone It’s tantamount to a land grab even though they're only going to be taking a few parcels of land here and there to set up radar installations” radiation on the Electromagnetic range also concerns Erickson “What will happen is that we will use our service personnel contractors and possibly residents of the area -
