October 26 1872 in Holden Utah in a log cabin the fourth child of William Hardin and Nancy Maria Badger Ashby As a young boy growing up in Holden he learned early the value of hard work obedience to earthly and Heavenly parents and many other lessons that were of value to him his life His history tells throughout many interesting and stories At the age of nineteen Rodney went to Nevada with a group of men to shear sheep He became so proficient at the job that he could shear up to 100 head a day In September 1895 he departed for r a mission to the North Alabama Conference Mission President Elias S Kimball believed in the missionaries traveling without purse and script and in his history Brother Ashby tells several incidents where food lodging and many clothing other things were given to them as the need arose Rodney B Ashby returned from his mission on August 21 1898 and on September 29 1898 he and Jane Marinda (Minnie) Stephenson were married in the Salt Lake Temple He had been interested in this young lady since his youth For three years he taught school in winter and farmed in the summer Then he and his brother Nathanial bought two farms in Leamington Rodney’s consisted of two hundred acres about sixty being under cultivation He raised good hay grain and seed and was able to support his large family quite comfortably On April 15 1900 Rodney B Ashby was set apart by Apostle Francis M Lyman as Bishop of the Leamington Ward At this time the ward consisted Entries are being sought for t’ie Second Annual Territorial Statehouse Quilt Show to be held in conjunction with the 1988 Millard Mule Rendezexposivous This show is a tion and is open to all quilters Quitters tne area are enfrom throughout couraged to enter their quilts in this year’s show This year he show will take place in the historic Legislative Meeting Hall on the third floor of the Territorial Statehouse Museum The quilts will be displayed alongside various pieces of art by some of Utah’s most famous artists Additionally quilts made by early pioneer settlers during the 1800s will be available for public viewing Entries for this year’s show will be accepted at the Territorial Statehouse at 50 West Capitol Avenue in Fillmore throug 6:00 pm Friday September 2nd The show will officially begin at 9:00 am on Saturday September 3rd and will conclude Monday evening September 5th at 6:00 as the grounds were cleared Fort Deseret Rodney Ashby while very young When he was he and his wife were called as ordinance workers to the Manti Temple where they served for three and years Rodney became ill and doctors removed his right leg July 20 1946 He passed away January 8 1948 and was buried two days later in Leamington cemetery Rodney’s wife who was known as Minnie was always very active in the Church She was organist for all the auxiliaries when she lived in Holden and also in Leamington She gave music lessons and some of her students later became ward organists She loved Primary and served as teacher first counselor and president Shejwas also first counselor and president in the Relief Society and worked in both the YLMIA and the Sunday School She was a talented and wonderful person and a great help mate to her husband of about 60 families with about 300 members and the school house was their only meeting place In order to raise money for a ward building held auctions members bazaars socials presented plays to other towns and paid personal allotments The in 1910 church was completed and still stands It is the east part of the old church At the time it was built there were two classrooms upstairs and the bell in the tower called ward members to church on Sunday morning After and years as Bishop Brother Ashby asked to be released so he could go on a shortterm mission to the Northwestern states He left November 13 1928 and returned April 3 1929 after many teresting and experiences Rodney and his wife were the parents of eleven children six sons and five Two of the children died daughters Things are happening for the good at Fort Deseret Since June much time and equipment have been donated to clear the grounds at the site Last week Duane Galli used his equipment to move tons and tons of dirt (2 feet in depth to be exact) from along the front of the fort to improve the view of the fort The State Park Division has agreed to help with a day of labor and equip- ment The stabilization and restoration of the fort will begin within a few days We are a minor park so the State Park Division can promist very little help It will be up to all joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during August 1988 The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s effort to encourage tree planting throughout America “The Colorado blue spruces will have many uses in your home landscape” John Rosenow the Foundation’s executive director said “With their silver color and compact conical shape they can be used as individual ornamentals an windbreak
