Show miii CSPS Millard County Business of the Week First district congressional candidate Gunn McKay commented about the recent accident near Fillmore on where 80 drums of sodium cyanide fell off the tractor trailer carrying the chemicals The transportation of hazardous waste and toxic chemicals through our state has to be looked at very closely McKay said McKay said “1 am concerned that our current representative Jim Hansen thinks that Utahns are worrying to much about toxic and hazardous chemicals I think Utahns should worry about the the transportation of dangerous substances In light of this recent accident what if a truck filled with nuclear or hazardous waste had a in Bountiful?” similar accident on “Fortunately the spill near Fillmore was in a rural area but it still took three days to clean up I can’t imagine what the consequences would have been if we had a similar spill of hazardous waste in Bountiful With all the families and neighborhoods around our highways we do have to be very concerned about the transportation of waste and chemicals through our state” McKay commented “As a congressman” McKay continued “I would look very closely at the proposed waste site in Nevada Most of those shipments would be driven through Utah Safety is a very important part of the nuclear and hazardous waste issue I want people to know am concerned about jobs but the safety factor can not be overlooked” Defensive Driving Course classes After 60 years George Rowley’s barbershop is a Fillmore institution by Dawn Carder With a twinkle in his eyes George Rowley entered the living room of his house Immediately he put his guests at ease with his keen sense of humor It was easy to and relaxed manner had understand why his barbershop become an institution in the town of Fillmore Born in Scipio George moved to Fillmore when he was five years of age ‘‘The road in was only wagon tracks then" he reminisced The year was 1916 Following graduation from Millard 17 George traveled High north to attend the Salt Lake Barber His brother Maurice was College and barber a to George puralready suing the same career just "seemed like the thing to do” The course of study required two months of supervised work barbering and shaving Once the the young training was completed barber returned to Tillmore and servhis ed an apprenticeship under brother’s tutelage 1928 was the actual date August on which George marked the beginning of his service career in Fillmore Utah With Maurice he gave 25 cents shaves and 35 cent haircuts first in a shop on the east side of Main Street and later in the Avalon Theater building Sometime later George branhis own and established his ched oui business in the place that is now Bakers’ Photography It was after returning to work in his hometown that George met Myrtle an attractive young woman from Holden “I also graduated from Millard High" didn’t know shared Myrtle "but George at the time We met through friends” The two were married in 1930 and today they are parents of two of Fillmore and Don of Annabell- e- grandparents of five and of one great grandparents For thirty years George operated his business in the Main Street shop he rented from Chester Baker According to Myrtle “The shop was a landmark It was a meeting place where the men gathered to talk and socialize" Over the years Myrtle too was bus While George cut hair for men women and children his energetic wife ran the couple’s other establishment Rowley's Variety Shop Serving as manager Myrtle was responsible for hiring buying decorating selling etc She continued in this capacity until the store was closed in 1970 Then her energies were redirected as she went to work for other people in such places as Cooper's Truck Stop and a grocery store Ever busy George and Myrtle worked raised their sons and enjoyed life in Fillmore Two years ago following Chester Baker’s death George was forced to leave his cherished spot Both he and Myrtle say things aren't quite the same now “People don't have anyplace in which to gather on Main Street now that George’s shop is gone” she lamented The loss of the Main Street shop however did not defeat the spunky and determined Rowleys Assessing the entire situation they looked at the A Thurs August 11 1988 - "I’m glad did it" he quickly said “I have met lots of nice people and enjoy the 'bulland the friendships” George and Myrtle are so full of life one can never imagine either becoming old or bored She continues to do the laundry for the barbering business and she cleans the shop Together they enjoy fishing summer and winter they are involved in the Senior Citizens group and they play piano and guitar in the “Fillmore Swingers” band of four Myrtle also serves on the Millard County Fair Board Times have changed the location is new but George Rowley’s barber shop remains a Fillmore institution Millard County and Utah” Jennifer Carter FiIImorites CUB SCOUT granddaughter reigns as 1988 Ute Stampede Queen Jennifer Carter daughter of Karl and Helen Carter of Nephi and granddaughter of Stan and Afton Stevens was recently selected Queen of the 54th Annual Ute Stampede She was chosen from a field of eight hopefuls Candidates participated in a contest where they demonstrated riding skills Jennifer was judged winner after the highest marks for receiving horsemanship poise appearance and personality Jennifer reigned over the Stampede celebration and has represented the at parades and rodeos Siampede throughout Utah during the summer She has been riding horses since she was a year old Now she trains horses and enjoys helping with her father’s quarter horse business In high school rodeos Jennifer queens runs barrels breakaways and team ropes She went to State in 1987 in goat lying and team roping She has won several titles as Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality Jennifer is a senior at Juab High School where she is an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society She is a Jafra consultant and she is employed at Circle C sing in accents Humpback which indicate the home of Mrs Black in Delta Country Estates The Cub Scouts visited the newspaper olfice to learn how a reporter gets and writes a story Members of the newspaper staff showed the boys hat they do on their jobs Bethany Chaffin to conduct writer’s workshop at M C Fair writer teacher Bethany Chaffin editor was the judge of the entries in the writing division of the Millard County Fair Mrs Chaffin will conduct a writer’s workshop on Saturday August 13 at the writer’s exhibit room at the fair From 9 am until 10 she will teach about poetry Anyone interested in writing or reading poetry will enjoy this session From 10 until 11 she will teach fiction full writing prose essays length novels etc A1 o’clock Mrs Chaffin will meet with those who had entries in the different categories She will critique and explain the reason for the way the entries were judged and give suggestions on how to improve writing skills This year is the 4th year of the writing program in the fair Anyone in the State Park This is the schedule for Saturday August 20 Mrs Clark stated that beginning at 10:00 am imd running throughout the day will be special guided walks conducted by the members of the society These special guided walks will give people an opportunity to learn more about the mysterious petroglyphs and pictographs found in the park Refreshments of birthday cake and soft drinks will be given
