My mood wasn’t great but the mail made it worse got another one of those letters from I hope an (who needs this invoices tear kind) wanting signed sheets etc so they can get this matter cleared up I started looking up the old ads and golly gee they date back to 1986 This is the second one I have had lately both from businesses that make their money here and spend it elsewhere certainly not pay the bills they run up locally And I have learned in the past that this is an old dodge to not pay the bill The owner doesn’t live here so what does he care? They think if they ask for I Thurs May - - 5 u 1988 TO THE £Ue enough tear sheets and other nonsense we’ll eventually just give it up and put them in the bad debt file and they can go merrily on their way I always felt that shopping locally meant not only spending my rfioney here what little I have but also shopping with locally owned businesses And guess this just reenforces my thoughts No it isn’t fair to lump them all together because there is one that comes to mind who advertises with us and always pays their bills promptly But in my experience this is an exception not the rule I’ve just got to get over this idea that everyone is honest and will pay as soon as they can Small claims court here I come EDITOR Newspaper enjoyed Vaughn and I certainly enjoy getting the paper each week It helps us keep up with the news away from home We are looking forward to being in Fillmore the weekend of July 9 for a reunion of the Richard and Minonie Ashby family Their children were Fern Robison Geneva Speakman Gene Ashby and Alice Robison We will probably send a notice of the reunion later Thanks Marion Speakman 4250 Marsh Road Marietta GA 30066 “Just say no” 1988 has been designated May as National “Just Say No To Drugs” Week Millions of young people will be recognized for their decision to live drug and alcohol free lives On May 11 of that week I will be participating in the 4th Annual “Just Say No” Walk to be held in DC It is my hope Washington thousands of young people will join me on that day to demonstrate their decisions to say NO to drugs and alcohol and emphasize the importance of comI urge everyone munity involvement from all sectors of society to become involved in this event During this week other towns and communities across the country will also participate in a wide variety of activities including parades marches and school and community-widprograms I’ve received hundreds of letters from young people teachers parents law enforcement officials Is there an Einstein or a DaVinci in my classroom who gets average in math or art? Flexibility exercises should be done Track stars are daily year round notorius for tight hamstrings low back and gastrocs (calf muscles) Tightness in these areas not only make you prone to injury but also limit your stride and thus your time In addition to the above areas attention should be given to the adductors in hurdles) quads and iliotibial band is especially critical in Proper the track athlete compared to the distance athlete because even the itial steps are important Few track events allow time to “warmup” as you go Strength training for the track athlete has sometimes been controversial However when the goals of the strength training are kept in mind (power for the sprint athlete overall strength for the athlete that runs over 2 minutes) can be very strength beneficial Focus should be on lower weight and higher repetitions as coman athlete to that is training for pared strength gains Attention should be given to the quadriceps hamstrings hip extensors with some upper body work Some particular strength exercises for the track athlete are the bench press upright row bicepstriceps squats (Or half squats) and straight leg raise (with opposite knee bent) The weight that is used should be chosen by ability to do repetitions Three sets are then performed with the last set being very difficult to accomplish Remember your goal is to run so devote a realistic amount of time to your strength training It is not the main focus of your conditioning program Track is one sport that to excel in requires year attention Having an aerobic base doing sports specific drills flexibili-- t (intervals speed work etc exercises and strength training can to be the prepare your athletes soundest strongest maybe even the fastest (!) athletes among the competition The only thing better to hope is your athletes have the right parents! And later in about the middle of March I mentioned another family whose daughter was taking the entrance test to come to this school Here’s the final chapter On March 12 Mr Takao announced jo me that the “gloom season” as it is called in Japan was over It’s gloomy because the students from grade school to university level are taking those blamed entrance tests His sort took the test to Yasafurichi High School and passed That was a load off his father’s shoulders because Mr Takao had taught English at that school for seven or eight years before being transferred to this school But Hajimu his son passed every test he took one to an average public school an above average private school and Yasafurichi an excellent public school But in Hajimu’s typical adolescent behavior he decided he didn’t want to go to the best school because his father had taught there and knew many of the teachers and the principal He was afraid that he would be watched too carefully by the teachers and they would tell his father if he didn’t do well on a test So he wanted to go to the private school Needless to say Mr Takao talked like a Japanese uncle to get him to change his mind But Mr Takao is a new breed of father in Japan and he let his son choose which school he would attend 735 t IS JAPAN " First however he pointed out to Hajimu that this was the biggest decision of his life Not only was the curriculum better at the public school but so was its reputation And if anything reputation counts over and over again in Japan Japanese are almost obsessed with attending the “right” school (Remember how the teachers reacted who because I knew someone from Sophia University? graduated And this obsession carries over in other brands: name realms They love to buy Pierre Cardin Levis Snoopy Mickey Mouse In fact I believe many times here I have seen name brands that are Levis with the wrong not authentic kind of stitching on the pocket or not brass rivet poor quality towels with Cardin’s name) these two facts the Furthermore better curriculum and reputation might even affect which university Hajimu will be accepted to which ultimately would affect his career opportunities Finally he pointed out that while Japanese parents are charged a tuition for students to attend high school because it’s not compulsory the tuition to a private school is much But her mother and ather 'were at He is a professor chagrined Hiroshima University Imagine the embarrassment of having his daughter atand his he tend a low public school So wife decided there was another alternative that only a few Japanese parents are able to do financially or emotionally THey would send their daughter to the United States for three years to learn English They called and asked my advice I knew that the decision had to be made in just one week so I didn’t have time to beat around the bush (sounds like campaign presidential a possible slogan) I said that I thought it would the be difficult for science and math learn to daughter and history and type when she spoke no English especially since she must already be behind if she failed this test And she is a shy girl not prone to pounce on English I added in defense of schools all over America that they aren’t really prepared to be schools American teachers are having a hard enough time teaching students who already speak English let a Finally alone those who don’t homestay family- -a foster family-- is not the same as loving supportive parents to a student who is already having difficulty in school A couple of days later the wife’s father’s house burned down as a result of cold weather and poor heating apparatus That coupled with wanting to do the best thing for their student they decided to let her go to school one year in Japan and THEN maybe send her to the United States All that news came from a mutual friend They haven’t spoken to me since higher Hajimu said he knew all that and he didn’t even care that the private school was an all boys’ school or that he’d have a longer bike ride The decision was final and had to be made within a week of taking the test The other friend whose child was taking the test for this school well her story didn’t have such a happy ending THe girl took several tests too But her best try was for this school Akifuchu which is an average public school She failed the test So that meant she would have to attend a lower private or public school The County Agent so to much beef? promote Why pay by Larry Campbell Millard Co USU Extension Agent “It seems like an awful lot” my friend said “If the cow calf man feeder and packer all backgrounder pay some of those cattle will be paid on three or four times That’s a lot” Let’s take a step back a minute In December of 1985 the USD A approved and Congress passed the “Beef Promotion Act of 1985” It established the Cattlemen Beef Promotion and Research Board to strengthen the beef in the Market industry’s position plac- e- a place that had remained flat for pounds of consumption and actually began to drop in 1985 Meanwhile chicken rose from 70 lb ten years ago to an expected 135 In a consumer pounds this year oriented world money talks or should I say money buys advertising Let me give you three examples The Bud Light Commercials you see on TV cost Anhyser Busch 200 million last year Wendy’s Hamburgers spent 170 million McDonald’s spent 400 million to make McDonalds your Kind of Place Now what do cattlemen spend to promote their own product? Nothing That is until last year In the first year of the Beef Promotion Act 359 million dollars were raised What did they do with it? Lots 45 research and product development projects were funded National TV radio magazine and newspaper ad campaigns were launched using accurate research data and celebrities to sell beef James and Paul Garner Cybil Shepherd Harvey promoted beef as “Real food for real people” Nolan Ryan and other cut figures touted “Beef-sports above” to consumers Did it work? You bet The cattle market is still up even though other meat products have fallen What about Utah? It 1987 $244000 were raised by the check off Utah keeps half of that for research and promotion in their state and sends the other half to the National Association For years are spoiled Cattlemen they’ve had the benefit of private and land grant college research that has panded their production and improved their management and they had it for free With Federal cutbacks and cost increases universities have had to cut back on their basic and applied research in agriculture because they just plain don’t have the dollars it takes Today the cattle industry is going to have to help itself if it wants to stay in business The American Dairy Association says it gained a 2 percent increase in demand for its 15 cents a hundred weight check off of milk Not too bad But they also figure dairymen will get back $934 for each beef check off ix LiLN’T ROB A BAA IK HAfJJ! AivBtmsEb! dollar they spend That’s based on advertising raising the price of beef i cent I know times are hard but if you can spend $2 to implant a calf jo make 15 or 20 dollars why can’t you spend one dollar to raise the price of a calf 10? These petroglyphs weren’t carved by ancient Indians but by pioneer workmen building the Territorial Capitol building! A close amination of the Capitol reveals numerous sets of initials carved into the red sandstone Most of these initials belong to the stonecutters and masons w ho practiced their trade here over 130 The years ago diary of Anson Call who was sent to establish the site for the Capitol states that from September 20 through 22 of 854 seven masons Delta Area Jrtlm Q Is il safe to carry a sandwich made with mayonnaise in a bag lunch?
