Show Meet the Mike Ashworth finds challenge in the insurance Gentry t business by Dawn Carder When the previous Farmers Insurance Agent in Fillmore Collette Hunt asked Mike Ashworth if he would like to be an insurance agent his answer was “No way!” Fortunately for Millard County residents Collette didn’t take “No” for an answer but “kept after” Mike until he “decided to give it (insurance) a shot” The challenge of tackling the project was intriguing Today Mike says that he is glad that he accepted the challenge glad that he became an insurance agent Oh it was a big adjustment from work he had done previously and there was stiff competition for the position he acquired Still "I like what I am doing I like the hours and I especially enjoy working with people” he stated Born and raised in Beaver Utah Mike took a job as a driller on an oil rig and moved to New Mexico following his graduation from high school For two years he was there alone before returning to Utah to marry his high school sweetheart Shari Both went back to Grant New Mexico where they lived and worked for the next six years As with many people roots for the Ashworths remained in Utah and the call of home beckoned them Leaving New Mexico they moved to Fillmore and Mike was hired as a security guard at IPP Six months later he took another a cement truck for From there he went to Champion work for Diversified Marketing where he stayed for approximately four years During this period of time Shari was working as a licensed life and health surance agent for Collette Hunt It was then that the two women put their heads together Collette approached Mike and the wheels were set into motion The first step for Mike was an interview with the District Manager of Farmers Insurance Group of Companies The interview took place in Orem the District Manager was apparently impressed for he told Mike to get an insurance license Mike then enrolled in Wall’s Insurance School in Salt Lake City where he completed thirty hours of study for licensure in life and health insurance Schooling completed he took the state test passed then had a two week waiting period before taking another test for property and casualty That test too Mike passed He then became an officially licensed insurance agent for life health property and casualty for Farmers Insurance Group The next step was somewhat like an apprenticeship For three months Mike was a “reserve trainee” selling and achieving a set level of production After the three month period he was appointed to Career Trainee and went to Pocatello Idaho for one week of schooling The Career Trainee period lasts for two years and Mike is nearing the end of this phase In August he will have completed the training time and then he assumes responsibility for everything including weekly reports! Awards and recognition have been presented to Mike for his professional excellence The company presented the Blue Vase Award to him for selling eight or more life policies in a four month time span (Mike achieved this goal when he was just starting his career training phase) In 1986 Mike was recognized as the Loss Rates Champion (auto) for maintaining the best record of any agent in the entire but Mike runs the business and is considered Office hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and clients frequently contact Mike at his home An insurance agent must develop andor hone his professional selling skills and he must keep up to date on new products Mike attends schooling Insurance sponsored by Farmers especially when something new such as a recently introduced life insurance is offered Most of the classes are held in Orem However Mike did attend a life insurance training session in Pocatello and he says that he will soon do the same for commercial insurance According to Mike Farmers Insurance sold its first policy in 1928 to a California rancher Since that time both the company and its offerings have grown Farmers now provides life health auto fire commercial and bond insurance and Mike Ashworth is “sold” on the company “I think the way in which Farmers handles claims is superior” he said “They (Farmers) are fast and fair Each case is handled individually rates are competitive and service is provided Farmers is the third largest seller of auto and fire insurance ' in the United States” There are several insurance agents in Fillmore and says Mike “Things seem to stay on an even keel” He credits Collette Hunt for providing him with a good business and to that he has added more customers Presently he has clients in Fillmore Scipio Holden Kanosh and Meadow-tEast Millard area A small town enthusiast Mike says that he really likes living in Fillmore where he Shari and their three children ages 9 6 and are firmly entrenched in community life He is a member of the Fillmore Chamber of Commerce he coaches Little League baseball and basketball teams last year coaching the Jazz basketball team Recreational interests include hunting and fishing normally in the Millard County area (Last year he hunted elk in Montana) Selling insurance is indeed quite different from drilling on an oil rig Each takes expertise Each has unique challenges lovely young woman arrives at the Chronicle Progress office to begin her weekly duty of delivering papers to stores and restaurants all around town She makes a count loads the papers in her car and is off to make her designated rounds Going up and down Main Street Gentry Smith has become the Chronicle’s “Queen of the Road” Gentry began her career at the Chronicle Progress somewhat earlier than her younger sisters While still an infant she sat on her mother’s lap as the lattej set type or she was placed in a canvas box in the office to watch all the activity According to “Grandma Sue” Gentry was happy “if she had her hat on” The oldest of the four Smith girls Gentry was born here in Delta but at age four she moved with her family to “There I liked the green California and the beach” she remembered But back to Delta she came after nearly five years of living in the sunny state At the age of nine Gentry began her in the formal (work experience newspaper business Her first job was From
