Show Millard Counly US PS Thun Jan 28 1988 - Page 7 Doug Petersen Petersen attends Scout Jamboree NEW MEMBERS OF National Honor Society top row L to R: Shelly Bunker Angela Staheli Stacie Stewart Teresa Willoughby Kristie Wright Kodi Roholt Juliette Scoville Bobbi Porter Jennifer Smith Tonya Bunker middle row Amy Hyde Melanie Rosenkrantz Sandy Petersen Shannon Jackee Lovell Brenda Boardman Jodi Petersen Tamara Reynolds Nicole Nielson Johnson bottom row Chris Stubbs Rex Butterfield Matt Shelton Brett Wardle Mike Burke Taylor and Lance Warnick Reece Lovell Sherilyn National Honor Society grows NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Officers: Mr Rex Butterfield Secretary Sherilyn Johnson ey President Ron Vice Petersen Advisor President Jon Cor- The Delta High Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 29 new members last Thursday Of these 29 27 were juniors two were seniors Officers were elected at the meeting also Sherilyn Johnson was chosen t Rex Butterfield will serve as Secretary The t serves as as a junior then as President during his or her Senior year Jon Corey is the current President The National Honor Society is an terscholastic organization founded to recognize those students who are striving for academic excellence To be eligible for membership one must have a cumulative grade point average of 35 of higher Everyone who qualifies is to become a given the opportunity member some refuse One of the primary duties of the National Honor Society is to organize and supervise the honors assemblies where the honor roll is announced and those students who have achieved honor roll status are recognized Two DHS students receive congressional nominations For the first time in Delta High history two students have received nominations to the congressional military academies Aleta Boardman received a nomination from Senator Jake Garn to the US Air Force Academy Clay received Murray nominations from both Senator Jake Orrin Hatch Garn and Senator Senator Gam nominated him to the US Air Force Academy and and Senator Hatch nominated him to Anapolis Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy Getting a nomination to a military academy is a very difficult and time consuming task Both Aleta and Murray had to write numerous letters fill out lengthy applications go to interviews in Salt Lake in the offices of the congressmen take physicals eye tests in order to be and other tests considered Aleta and Murray traveled to Hill Air Force Base to undergo rigorous physical fitness testing Aleta and Murray also both attended the Summer Scientific Seminar last summer at the in Colorado Air Force Academy Springs Colorado Both Murray and Aleta are "A” students at Delta High School Murray is the Sterling Scholar in mathematics Doug Petersen son of Bryan and Cindy Petersen recently returned from three weeks in Australia and New Zealand Doug is a scout in the Delta 5th Ward and was one of some 16000 scouts from throughout the world who the 16th World attended Scout Jamboree During his trip he visited Sydney Melbourne and Sorrento Their troop of 36 scouts and 4 adult leaders toured on buses to see such sights as Phillip Island watching penquins and visiting a farm At the farm they saw sheep shearing sheep herding sheep dipping and cattle talk The group visited Healesville Sanctuary where they got to “cuddle Koalas” and pet Kangaroos Christmas Eve was spent in Sorrento and another town a few miles away called Rosebud Most of the boys split up in groups of two and stayed in different families’ homes For Christmas the activities were mainly swimm'ng and surfing in the ocean It was quite a change from the average snowy Christmas in Utah! After Christmas they went to New Zealand and visited a town called Mattamatta Dec 31 1987 the last day of the year was the first day of the Jamboree which was in Australia the first day of a week and a half of activities There were at least 16 things for the scouts to do starting with computers and radios to an overnight hike and a one mile grueling obstacle course If a scout wanted to get muddy he went on the bike bungle or the obstacle course For a pleasant day he could do computers or the Guiness Book of World Records At this area one of Doug’s friends set a new Jamboree 35 cm record for the limbo Doug says “The Jamboree was a blast! All together just plain fun” There were only a few minor tragedies the worst being a severe electrical storm (the worst they’ve ever had there) Fortunately no one in Doug’s camp was hurt but some of the camps were totally ruined But in the end it all added up to a fun trip Deseret District Cub Scout Calendar Thursday Aleta Boardman and Murray and Aleta is the Sterling Scholar in science Murray and Aleta were questioned about their nominations Murray said “The Air Force Academy is probably the one I would choose because they will allow me to take two years off to serve a mission The Air Force Academy is one of the hardest colleges Delta Middle School Clay the nation so naturally I’m worried but the benefits are definitely worth in it” Aleta said “The Air Force Academy an excellent school and it is an honor to be nominated I would really like to go there” Aleta wants to study chemical engineering Aleta is the daughter of Pat and WE Boardman of Hinckley Murray is the son of Neil and Jill Clay also from Hinckley By Maria Oman is Fillmore student inducted into Alpha Chi Gary T Stinson son of Mr and Mrs Tom Stinson is one of 62 Abilene Christian University students recently inducted into Alpha Chi National Honor Society Stinson is a junior engineering physics major at ACU Alpha Chi has more than 260 chapters in colleges and universities across the United States Membership is offered to academically superior juniors and seniors ACU is the fourth largest private university in the Souhwest and the largest university affiliated with the Churches of Christ Enjoying the snow PLANNED ACTIVITIES at Delta Middle School included snowballaction with ing and snow sculpturing Students have enjoyed vigorous the mountains of snow Faculty supervision and participation enhanced the projects hy are muffins moister when I don’t paper baking cups?
