Dave Smith Conservation Officer Father” 1987 pheasant hunt Rainy conditions slowed down much of the pheasant hunting around the atate this last opening weekend Millard County was no exception Hunter success the first day was about 30 percent or bird for every three hunters Wet weather like we experienced is known to cause the birds to hold head for thicker cover longer andor where it is more difficult to flush them Success varied from field to field rather than from one part of the county to the next Hopefully drier conditions will return before next weekend It appears that fewer hunters came into the area to hunt pheasants this year I have been told that in the past many more hunters converged on Millard County on this weekend Last week the Delta area received a little bad press from the Salt Lake City papers In articles making season predictions the Delta area was the only area pointed out to have a lot of posted land and access problems Granted there is a lot of land posted in the area but it did not seem to limit hunter access 77 percent of the 238 pheasant hunters who were contacted in the field this weekend reported being able to find land to hunt on I this year received fewer complaints than last regarding posted land Many hunters I talked to were asking lanand comdowners for permission mented how courteous many of the landowners were 70 percent of the hunters j checked were from out of the county 24 percent of these hunters stayed overnight in local hotels It is pretty obvious how important the pheasant hunt is economically to Millard County and local businesses All one has to do is drive down Main Street midday Saturday to see all the business at the local However if this year goes restaurants like last very few of these hunters return to hunt the next weekend Whether this is a result of access proor number low pheasant blems whatever it is a weekend in which the of the local economy misses out on hunters checked claimed they’d be willing to buy permits if posted pheasant hunt units were established in Millard County again Many hunters said the reason they were hunting here this year was because pheasant hunt units in their area were already sold out Pheasant hunt units in the past helped finance the local pool and hospital Maybe it’s time to consider looking to establishing them again Those of you who support transplanhills ting
