Fillmore’s Little Rock Schoolhouse In the year 1867 the “Little Rock Schoolhouse” was one of three school the outside constructed buildings Fillmore Fort It was also the first school house in Millard County built with tax money It was built of sandstone quarried in the canyon east of town where the rock for the Territorial Statehouse came from It is still in good condition and has had a marker placed on it by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers which tells of its construction and the builders who worked on it It is located on the southwest corner of the “Town Square” Many pictures have been taken of this historical building and many generations of children have begun their education there However the first picture that we have knowledge of It is is one taken in the year picture of the students of that school year and was taken by a local a mister Madsen photographer The Teacher was Katherine A talented lady from Woodhouse Beaver Utah who taught in the school for two years then married William Rasmussen of Fillmore Her daughter Roene Rasmussen Whitney presented the DUP with a framed picture of the class her mother taught Della Dame Edmunds former resident of Fillmore and daughter of Mary A Dame a prominent citizen and worker in the DUP organization undertook the tremendous task of identifying each person on the picture by name address and whether they were still living Of the 39 pupils Miss Woodhouse taught in that one room with its domed ceilstove ing heated only by a that burned only wood 14 are still living Most of them remembered the stove and how hot it was if you sat or stood close it it and how cold the remainder of the room was and it was a real task to identify each of these students Helping Della in the Fillmore area were Paul and Dean Robison whose job was to contact family and friends of people in Fillmore that might recognize the children on the picture There seems to be no history as to when the “Little Rock School House” ceased to be used perhaps as other and larger schoolhouses were built nearby on the same block but we know it was used in 1920 and several other times until the year 1938 when it was again used for the Kindergarten or Beginners groups In 1953 it was given to the DUP and they restored it to a very lovely It meeting place for their organization was painted new electric lighting fixtures were hung that were replicas of the handcart wheels and the school since the surface The full Moon is nine times as bright as a makes of the visible half moon is extremely rough and mountainous which for more
