Everybody including Baby Bear laughed and laughed Then Baby Bear’s teacher said “Why don’t you write a letter to Goldilocks to tell her you’re sorry you scared her?” So Baby Bear took a piece of paper and a pencil out of his and wrote a letter to backpack Goldilocks When he was finished with the letter Teacher gave him an envelope to put it in and he neatly printed the address Teacher read to him from the telephone book (The phone book didn’t say what the ZIP Code was but Baby Bear thought the letter would probably get to Goldilocks okay WITHOUT a ZIP Code) TO BE CONTINUED Community Calendar pm Delta Wed 9 a m noon & pm Renewals any working day at Millard County Offices 27 28 Oct 29 Sept Registration for Precinct 18 Delta 39 So 300 E Nickle Insurance Bldg Sept 28 30 Oct 2 5 7 9 10 Hunter Safety course Delta Middle School pm October Family Violence Awareness month 1 Nov 5 Oct Delta Medical Classes Prenatal Center Classroom Thursday evenings 7:30 pm Oct 8 Blood Pressure Clinic Delta Public Health am & pm The Book Group 7:30 pm Fillmore Library “Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty” No charge Breast Cancer seminar Delta Community Medical Center classroom 6:30 pm ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS Meetings: Mon Wed & 8 pm ALAN0N: Wed 8 pm Delta Mental Health Offices 51 North Center For info call: PR0BLEMS& TEENAGE Geno: Call Millard County The tvtrv Editor - Dutson Susan Editorial ' Dawn Carder Reporter at Large Advertising i Sales Legal Billing Riley Wood Julie Ward Goertz Design Fillmore Office Manager Evelyn Mallet Deb Greathouse Receivable Accounts Circulation Julie Ward Goertz CirculationComp Production Circulation Rita Robinson Commercial In Advance 00 per year In County $1000 per 6 months Out of County $3000 per year $1100 per 6 months Out of County cents Single Copy Send Address Box 249 changes 84624 Delta Utah tan Rtqtwsl Mia Advcrtwnf Cba 3400 Mia Minors I Bazaar at Oct 28 Cancer Screening Clinic Delta 1st & 2nd Ward Bldg 222 West 200 North Appointments only call Oct 30 Utah Women’s Conference Salt Palace and Symphony Hall SLC Nov 5 Deseret District Cub Scout Pow Wow pm Delta Utah Stake Center “All American Cub Scouts” to Life is full of changes and choices Making appropriate decisions requires careful investigation of all alternatives Under the influence of alcohol and drugs I always seem to make the wrong choice I let my friends influence a lot of my decisions and I pay the I’m glad I have some consequences friends to help keep me out of trouble Call Geno Fresh or wobbles t John Waterbury Time for a change? Dear John I would like to share a personal experience with you that may be of terest to your readers For several years now problems have been developing between me and my two sons Our communication had stopped and we simply existed under at least when they the same roof I chose to live under it Apparently allowed them to get away with their unacceptable behavior so I am partly to blame but at the time I didn’t know how to take control of the situation Anyway things Spin the it is if it spins easily continued to deteriorate until the decision was made that they would move out At first I felt devastated I felt I had failed as a mother My self esteem was at rock bottom (I guess it had been there for a long time) But I finally realized that I was tired of feeling like that and decided to take some action Since my boys were leaving I decided to make it a positive experience I an apron cutting organized a party where I invited many of their party friends who were directly involved with their decision We had pizza and soft we played games that got drinks and a comeveryone communicating fortable atmosphere developed that was condusive to the coming events of When everything was the evening right I started the ceremony I read a letter to my boys that clarified my love and feelings for them (I had been unable to put that into words before) I said that since it appeared they had learned all they could from our home that it was only natural they “graduate” to the next level of their life and I presented each of them with certificate a graduation Explaining that I would always love them no matter what they did or what decisions they made I held up my apron strings gave We have discussed tennis elbow its and some signs and symptoms treatments that are commonly used Now we want to talk about prevention of tennis elbow or rehabilitation once the soreness is no longer present Several factors are involved when trying to prevent a tennis elbow Flexibility of the entire arm strength and technique all contribute to reducing the risk of tennis elbow Flexibility exercises are important to prepare the muscles for the start and stop of hitting the ball There is a deceleration and acceleration in opposing muscle groups with each stroke of the ball To stretch muscles effectively raise the body temperature by light jogging jumping jacks etc until a slight perspiration appears Then complete the stretching exercises below: Hold each position seconds Repeat each exercise five times You should never have pain only slight discomfort Stretch shoulder by placing one arm overhead one arm behind your back Try to touch fingers Reverse 2 Stretch biceps by interlocking behind back fingers keep elbows straight and raise arms 3 Stretch forearm extensors by locking elbow in front of you with palm down and pull wrist down Repeat with opposite arm 4 Stretch forearm flexors by locking elbow in front of you with palm up and pull wrist back Repeat with opposite arm 5 Lower back and leg stretches are important as well for safe tennis To strengthen your forearm and shoulder there are several simple exercises that can be performed With a simple hand gripper begin with elbow bent at 90° and grip up to 50 reps When you can grip 50 times without pain straighten elbow 'A Straighten position of elbow as you become stronger until elbow is straight 2 Wrist curls with palm up and palm down help strengthen the wrist flexors Delta Area -- and extensors Begin with and when 50 repetitions can crease by be done comfortably 3 Other upper body strengthening for the biceps triceps pectorals and latissimus are important for a well rounded program Special attention to your strokes by youhelf and perhaps a coach helps to prevent incorrect motions as you play a Incorrectly hitting backhand is often the cause of tennis elbow in the recreational players When hitting a one handed backhand you should keep the elbow almost fully extended Do not extend your wrist or lead with your elbow Do obtain power by turning sideways and using the muscles in your shoulder and trunk stead of the muscles in your arm Sometimes other strokes such as the forehand and serve also contribute to tennis elbow Again concentrate on using the muscles in your shoulder and trunk to propel the ball rather than forcing your arm to do all the work Moving your feet to obtain the position to hit the ball is essential to decrease the force on your arm which occurs when the ball fits the racket Playing on clay courts decreases the velocity of the ball which therefore decreases the impact force on your elbow Playing with new balls and using a racket with the proper grip size also reduces the stress on your elbow Some players benefit from using a tennis elbow strap placed Vi inch below the crease in your elbow However none of these factors can compensate for poor technique so have someone knowledgeable in tennis evaluate your strokes so you can enjoy tennis to the fullest without placing a strain on your elbow If you have any questions regarding this article or any other sports related topics please forward them to us Write Dr Steve Henry SPORTS spelling “beder edukashun” while teachers lament that waitresses make more money pretty well tells the story of public education in this state We believe as Secretary of Education Bennett recently stated that the National Education Association is the greatest obstacle to education reform in the country Of course the Utah Education Association following in big brother’s footsteps plays the same role in Utah The UEA’s idea of reform is to pour more money into a system that hasn’t done a good job in years and then convince the taxpayer that things will get better Such procedures assessment as stressing achievement and accountability measuring performance of both students and teachers in school choice allowing parental selection are all anathema to the union Another cartoon quoting a New York university study that found only percent of recent education budget creases have been spent on reforms is also about typical of our state The career ladder which in theory is a “reform” and into which taxpayers were forced to pump 40 million new tax dollars this year in actuality takes Pro-lif- e teachers out of the classroom more often occupies their time with what is often contrived work provides no objective measure of teacher proficiency and according to some who ought to know has not helped a single student learn more Teachers are caught in a terrible position Many of them know that things are not right in education and they would like some real reforms Many would like the standards of the profession upgraded Many of them deserve increased pay and would be happy to demonstrate superior performance to justify it rather than compiling a scrapbook as they do with career ladder The union however along with those at various administrative levels who owe either their jobs or their allegiance to the union stand firmly in the way Output not input is at the heart of real reform What we need is increasnot more ed student performance money indiscriminately thrown at the system Until real reforms are made however teachers will continue to be wrongly saddled with the failures of the system Failures which rightly belong at the feet of UEA and NEA Mrs Mary Ann Murphy Sanitary Mechanical Co Inc San Diego Calif Divorce equality by Dennis Hinkamp Information Writer Utah State University Planning for divorce may seem like the ultimate act of cynicism Not confronting the possibility of divorce is noring the reality of the statistics Nationally and in Utah about 50 percent of new marriages can be expected to end in divorce If divorce does occur the courts have a responsibility to see that divorce settlements are as fair and equitable as to all parties However possible deciding what is “fair and equitable” is often left to a judicial system that often doesn’t have much data to work with Divorce studies can help the courts set guidelines for alimony child support and asset division Utah State University college of family lfie researchers Drs Jean Lown and Barbara Rowe testified as expert witnesses before the Utah Gender and Justice Task Force to help determine if there are inequities in the system “The state has been interested in our research on divorce in rural Utah because they are trying to determine the nature extent and consequences of any gender bias that might exist in the Utah court system” Rowe says poverty is one of the biggest problems we see” she says “Incomes of women are often reduced after divorce while at the same time Consumer men’s incomes stay the same or crease The women are often forced to take low paying jobs to meet necessities The divorce also meant that the women lost valuable employment-relate- coverage insurance benefits” health care and pension Even if the woman is awarded the family home in a settlement she is often not able to keep up the payments due to her lack of ability Rowe says although we have a general notion that splitting things down the middle is the ideal divorce settlement we have only a vague idea what the middle is It is not quite as simple as sorting things out “one for me and one for you” What may seem equitable at the time of the divorce may not be equitable down the road Inequities in economics or finances may not be based so much on gender bias as socialization The roles we take on of wage earners and child care providers are difficult to overcome Lown and Rowe are just starting to analyze data they gathered on divorce in eight rural Utah counties It is the first study to look closely at the economics of divorce in rural areas Rural divorce creates some unique problems For instance it is difficult to divide property when the couple’s main asset is a family farm “A Part of ACTION” Fillmore Area ZX' boiled when each boy a pair of scissors and they cut the strings ceremoniously My apron was still attached to me by pins with the words “unconditional love” I told them that if and when they ever wanted to return that it was possible With that the evening was brought to a close Now I don’t really know what the final outcome will be but I do know that we took a negative and painful situation and turned it into a positive one One in which I was able to express my love and deep feelings in a way that before had seemed impossible One in which I was able to rediscover my true self worth I guess only time will reveal the real impact but for nwo things look brighter Born Again Dear Born Again That’s what I call making the best of I’m impressed with a bad situation both your creativity and your willingness to break the negative pattern of the past My advice is to look at this experience not as an ending but as a beginning: a beginning that will lead to greater awareness of your needs and abilities greater confidence in directing your life and greater strength in your developing independence I would caution that you not move too quickly from here on For change to be permanent it must progress slowly perceptible not so much in progress but in result As you change everyone around you will be affected and their ability andor willingness to adapt to the new you may not take place as rapidly as you would like Change is for everyone difficult and rapid So don’t change is often frightening attempt to go too far too fast Become comfortable with the new you but and growing and keep moving developing Because after all isn’t that what life is all about? But have you heard what happened after the Three Bears came home and Goldilocks took off running as fast as her little legs would carry her? Well I’m going to tell you that story Goldilocks had just been playing with Little Red Riding Hood at Grandma’s house and had made a wrong turn on the way home That’s how she’d ended up at the house of the Three Bears She was hungry and tired and she hadn’t meant to do any harm (Surely the Bears knew that) When they scared her awake Goldilocks had found her way back to her own she lived with her Mom and Dad On Monday morning at school TO THE half as much used in the average the average bath hot water shower as is in by Warren Ottley How do you smell? I don’t mean what kind of an odor you give to others rather how is your sense of smell? Do you enjoy pleasant odors and are you repulsed by those not so pleasant? Is your sense of smell as acute as it used to be? Smell is probably less important to man than any of his other senses Animals of course use their discerning sense of smell in the process of survival Many “tastes” are really a blend of tastes and smells If a person holds his nose he may find it very difficult to tell the difference between a piece of onion and a piece of apple Smells I find pleasant: Bacon and eggs cooking on a frosty morning orange blossoms the aroma of a good cigar (smoked by someone else) a chocolate bar delicate perfume on a beautiful woman a newly bathed and powdered baby Smells I find nauseating: Cigarette and pipe smoke the garbage dump in the summer time people too lazy to take a bath over ripe bananas beer (especially on someone’s breath) burning human flesh paint thinner and gasoline I am somehow also turned off by people who say “stink” instead of “unpleasant odor” Ouley’s Oddball Observation: Wonderful isn’t it that we don’t all like or dislike the same things? |
