Show Millard County Thurs (JSPS May 28 1987 Page 7 Community Event OF DISPLAY made CRAFTS by Senior Citizen Center Fillmore Senior Citizens display their talents Paintings large and small poetry beautiful embroidery ceramics lovely hand knit or crocheted afghans and many many lovely quilts of all colors and designs graced the Pahvant Valley Senior Citizen Center in Fillmore last Thursday These beautiful articles were all made or crafted by senior citizens of this area and on display for everyone to come and see It was noted that these fine talents have not been lost but are alive and flourishing with older generation Along with the displays was a program consisting of all senior citizen There were poems comparticipants posed and read by Norma Gagon and Angie Green Gladys Warner solos sung by Dell Allgood Lillian Rogers and Vivian Seguine two piano The President Millard Fillmore Library Gwen Librarian Hunter Fillmore 25 South Utah 100 West Call for Art The Annual Millard High School Alumni Art Exhibit will be held in the new library from July 2 through July 23 1987 Anyone who ever attended Millard High School either as a student or a teacher is invited to enter one fwprkr AU media will be accepted cluding 3 dimensional sculpture and photography Every piece must be matted and framed and have suitable hangers (wire or clip) Sculpture pieces should include a title card If you know of anyone in your family or otherwise whose work you would like to see exhibited-- or you may see that they get enter your the word Anyone wishing us to send an invitation to someone who lives “away” should bring the address to the library before June 11 or as soon as possible to give the artist time to send in work Freight charges are the responsibility of the exhibitor We would like work which was not exhibited in the 96 pieces shown last year in the Territorial State House in the Legislative Room We appreciate to use that historic the opportunity room but it has no air conditioning of these th and it does have disadvantages are overcome in the new President Millard Fillmore Library (25 Fillmore South 100 Hospital) The paintings will be hung in the multipurpose room the main library and in the halls It is planned to have the show open during a few hours on the 4th of July and will be available on request by reunion groups Call Gwen or the library Hunter to make arrangements for a special opening Librarian Workshop The informationworkshop for librarians in the six county area was held in Ephraim Library May 20 Helen Cox from the State Library Association made available materials on the new Book Group Program cooperatively sponsored by the library association and the Utah Department of Humanities Fillmore library participated in two of the previous programs (the first Onlibrary to use “Not for Children ly” in the Let’s Talk About It series two years ago) The new program is much more flexible for local users and is very attractive The titles we are terested in are “Utah a sense of place” “Being Ethnic Becoming American: Struggles Successes Symbols” and the series on “Working” These programs are to be utilized in the winter or in the fall of next year A list of resources from the Dept of Humanities was also presented and discussed A Past Governor A book which came into our hands to us recently was a real True the name of Charles R Mabey was familiar to older patrons and to some Utah History buffs who recognized that he was Governor of Utah from 1921 to 1925 we may have even known that he was a veteran of two wars and also lived through two more but we did not know he was a poet of note This new (to us) book of Poetry and Sunflowers” by Prose "September Charles Rendell is a soothing First birthday solos by Katherine Nielsen and all highlighted by the Pahvant Valley Swingers Band who played intermittently all morning and afternoon A delicious lunch was served td those who made reservations Millard County Commissioner Abe Johnson also came for lunch and spoke briefly to the seniors on local problems that may effect them Older Americans Day was in conSenior junction with the National Citizen Center Week and celebrated in East Millard County area this past week A good crowd attended but the center was in hopes more of the townspeople would have come to see the lovely displays of articles and realize the talents these people have sometimes challenging book which you will enjoy Try it! Governor Mabey was also president of the Poets of the Pacific from Leo J Juir says in his troduction of “September Sunflowers” referring to another of Mabey’s books ‘The Pony Express’ an Epic of 140 pages and 261 stanzas “When time has matured its appraisal of this noble writing The Pony Express by Charles Rendell Mabey will be named among the greatest historic epics of our era” Summer at the Circus! The Summer Reading program will begin with registration at 3:30 Thursin the library All books day June read on our program will be counted also on Mr Chip R Munk’s program at the Elementary School’s summer reading program All children are welcome however it is not a babysitting service If small ones come they must be accompanied by an older child or parent We will record sheets and most and have cards of all STORY TELLERS! make up the summer calendar for the Fillmore Civic Arts Council Repeats are the popular Arts in The Park (with a new format and separate article in this paper) and the Talent Show on July 4 Arts in the Park has been expanded to include adults as well as children with more activities and more entertainment Dates for the event are June 12 and 13 from 5 pm through the evening The Talent Show is under the direction of Ilene Cooper Edith Callister and Nadine Perkes with a committee of other council members Location More will also be at the Amphitheatre information will be published soon The Council is also the Millard High School Alumni Annual Art Exhibit which will be held in the new Library July 2 through July 23 a New events include Quilt Show in the Pod at the Old Capital State Park
